Before Madeline entered their lives, they had shared so much happiness, only for it all to turn sour in the end.
Thoughts swirled relentlessly in her head, and Jessica had no idea when she finally drifted off to sleep.
The next day.
Outside the courthouse, Simon checked his watch again impatiently.
He muttered, “Where’s Jessi? We should be heading in by now.”
“See? I told you we should’ve waited for Jessi, but you insisted on coming early. Now look where we are,” Stella complained to her husband.
That morning, when Jessica still hadn’t come downstairs after a long wait, Stella was prepared to stay put. But her husband insisted they wait outside
the courthouse instead and help Jessi organize her documents there.
Reluctantly, Stella followed him out.
“Could Jessi have overslept? Maybe we should call to check?”
Sana glanced at her phone, growing increasingly anxious.
“No, what if she’s driving?” Simon objected.
Stella couldn’t wait any longer. “I’m going back to get Jessi,” she said, worry etched on her face.
Dereck’s expression hardened, but he didn’t argue with his wife.
“Jessi’s still not here?”
Just then, Brian, who had been waiting separately, suddenly approached them.
“Why are you here? You’re not welcome,” Dereck snapped.
He shot Brian a frosty glare, his mood soured by the evidence he’d just seen.
“I’m really worried about Jessi,” Brian said.
Brian pretended not to hear and continued speaking on his own.
Dereck sneered. “That’s unnecessary.”
Brian opened his mouth to explain, but before he could say anything, a court official approached and announced, “You may enter now.”
Simon frowned instantly. The hearing was about to begin, yet Jessi…
Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps approached.
Everyone around heard it.
“Sorry, I’m late.”
Panting heavily, Jessica hurried in at a jog after getting out of the car.
Stella rushed over to steady her.
“Slow down!” she urged, worry in her voice.
