Chapter 24
She paused for a moment, then lowered her head and kept working on her design draft. She had too much to do to waste time on anything else.
Not long after she got back into it, her phone vibrated again. Jessica glanced at it in the middle of her work, frowned, and didn’t want to answer. But Brian kept calling, over and over.
Knowing Brian, she knew he wouldn’t call more than twice unless it was something serious.
With a frown, Jessica finally answered, thinking, ‘Brian better actually have something to say.
She asked, “What is it?”
“Jake has a fever,” Brian said.
The moment the line connected, both of them started to speak–then both went quiet for a few seconds.
Brian frowned deeply. He thought, ‘So now all she ever says when she picks up is “What is it“? That’s it?‘
Holding back a frustration he didn’t know how to release, he questioned her, his tone sharp, “Jessica, what are you even so busy with? You seriously don’t have time to come home?”
Jessica let out a heavy breath. Her concern for Jacob had just been shattered by Brian’s voice.
Jessica shot back without pause, “He’s sick? Then take him to the hospital, or give him medicine to bring the fever down. I’m not a doctor.
“You think just calling me over will make him better? Or do you seriously believe that even taking him to the hospital is only my responsibility?”
For the past six years, she had taken care of them so thoroughly that Brian got used to doing nothing. She thought, ‘Now Jacob’s sick, and even taking him to the hospital or giving him medicine has to be my job?‘
Brian hadn’t expected Jessica to be even angrier than he was. He hadn’t even started yet.
After a pause, his voice dropped. “Jake already took the medicine and went back to sleep. I was asking you to come home and take care of him.”
Jessica let out a cold laugh. “Sylvie’s a professional. He doesn’t need me specifically.”
“And besides, isn’t Madeline always there for you two?” Jessica said calmly. “She’s sweet and gentle, perfect at taking care of people. And she’s Jacob’s favorite. Wouldn’t she be the perfect choice to look after him?”
What she really meant was that both Brian and Jacob favored Madeline. Jessica thought that if she stepped aside and let Madeline take care of them, everyone would be happy.
Brian blurted out, “Madeline has work. She doesn’t have time.”
Jessica laughed in a fury. She thought, ‘Madeline has no time because she’s working. But I’m just supposed to drop everything, give up my career, and go back home for Brian and Jacob? In his eyes, I’m just the one who’s supposed to sacrifice, huh?”
Jessica said sarcastically, “I’m not going. Jacob doesn’t even like me. If I go take care of him, won’t it just make his fever worse? Let Maddie do it.”
She didn’t wait for Brian to respond and hung up right after. She thought, ‘Now he remembers me just because he wants me to sacrifice again?‘
Jessica closed her eyes. Once the tears in her eyes were gone, she slowly opened them again. She didn’t want to let Brian and Jacob get to her anymore. She figured Jacob was just having a fever and it was nothing serious.
At Atkinson Villa, Brian looked at the sleeping Jacob. His hand tightened around his phone as he thought, ‘Jessica hung up on me again, and now she even…
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
“Come in, Brian said.
