Chapter 63
When people were at a loss for words, they would often laugh instead. Jessica’s lips curled into a mocking smile, and she said. “Oh? Then I won’t resign.
The moment the words left her lips Madeline’s expression frore slightly. Forcing a smile, she said, “That’s really great news, Jessi.”
Your smile doesn’t seem sincere,” Jessica joked.
Madeline insisted. Jessi, I genuinely hope you’ll stay. If you’re resigning because of me, my conscience won’t be at peace.
Madeline, drop that act. No matter what kind of relationship you have with Jacob or Brian, you had better not offend me.” Jessica issued her final warning
The blame for the affair was not on one person alone. She would not place all the fault on Madeline while turning a blind eye to Brian’s betrayal.
With that, she picked up her phone from the conference table and announced. Tm leaving. You have Brian and Jacob now.”
She walked away decisively, not sparing even a glance at Brian.
Just as she said. Brian and Jacob were no longer her family, so she would never look back.
At that moment, Madeline was sure that Jessica had completely let go of Brian and Jacob.
She had spent years carefully imitating Jessica, striving to match her in every way, even losing herself in the process, just to secure her place by Brian’s side.
In the end, the very things she had longed for and fought so hard to obtain were things Jessica discarded without hesitation.
Madeline felt like she was a clown. What she thought Jessica cared about most, and what she thought she stole from Jessica, turned out to be something Jessica didn’t even want.
Unaware of Madeline’s inner turmoil, Jessica returned to her office. She gathered her belongings in preparation to leave.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open. Brian entered and locked it.
He demanded. Jessica, are you really determined to divorce me, huh? Are you really prepared to give up on Jake?”
His eyes were slightly red. Whether from anger or something else was unclear.
“You should’ve received the court summons by now. Mr. Atkinson, we are both adults. I don’t have time to waste on you.” Jessica glanced at Brian once, then lowered her head to continue packing the small items on her desk.
In the storage box were a scattering of little things and a few planners she had made herself.
Without warning, Brian swept the box to the floor, scattering its contents. He shouted, “I won’t let you leave.”
Jessica’s eyes, normally calm and bright, now took on a chill that made them appear faintly cold.
When she looked at him with her chill eyes, Brian’s rage suddenly had nowhere to go.
“Even if we get divorced.…..” He paused, his voice deeper. “You don’t have to resign.”
As soon as he finished speaking, his emotions flared again. He stepped forward and grabbed Jessica’s arm. “You’re trying to draw a clean line between us. You want to cut ties completely, don’t you?”
Brian thought, ‘She said divorce without giving me a chance. She said she doesn’t want Jacob, and she just refuses to check on him. Now she even wants to quit.
Panic rose in his chest. He feared that after this, there would be nothing left linking them.
“Let go of me.” Jessica snapped.
Brian insisted. “No way.”
Jessica grew impatient and tried to break free, but Brian’s grip only tightened.
