An hour later, the DNA results were in. Sophia looked down at the paper, feeling no surprise at all.
Emily hadn’t lied to her.
The DNA comparison between Sophia and Charles showed a 25% match, meaning they were related by blood, but definitely not as father and daughter.
So, she was actually the daughter of Charles’s brother.
Sophia thought, ‘But ever since I came back to the Evans residence, I’ve never heard anyone talk about Charles having any brothers.’
Annabelle spotted Sophia coming out with the DNA report and leaned in, eyes full of curiosity.
“So, what did it say? Come on, let me see!” Annabelle urged.
When she caught sight of the results, Annabelle’s eyes widened in surprise. She asked, “What does this even mean?”
Sophia knew Annabelle was way too lively and never had the patience to sit through lab work.
Annabelle’s parents had told Sophia more than once that they always hoped Annabelle would follow in their footsteps, but Annabelle just wasn’t cut out for it. That was why they decided to take on an apprentice to pass on their legacy.
By pure luck, Sophia had stumbled into their secret base and got completely hooked on all the experiments.
So even though Annabelle’s parents were legends in the scientific world, Annabelle couldn’t even tell what an STR locus was in DNA.
“It means Charles and I are related by blood, but he’s not my father,” Sophia explained.
Annabelle propped her chin on her hand and said, “So Charles is your biological dad’s brother?”
“Yeah, because we share about 25% of our DNA,” Sophia replied.
Annabelle asked, confused, “But I’ve never heard of Charles having a brother.”
Sophia said, “Same here. I’ve been with the Evans family for three years, and no one’s ever brought up Charles having a brother.”
Every June, Charles would take a day to visit South Hill Cemetery to honor a friend’s memory.
Sophia thought, ‘If I remember right, that time is actually coming up soon.
‘What if Charles isn’t really going to see some friend? What if he’s actually paying respects to my
Sophia turned to Richard and asked, “Mr. Sterling, have you ever heard anything about it?”
real father?‘
Richard shook his head and said, “No, but I can have someone look into it.”
Even though the Sterling family and the Evans family both lived in Jelasburg, they rarely ever interacted. Plus, back in those days, the Evans family hadn’t made a name for themselves yet–their name basically didn’t even exist in elite circles.
So, honestly, it was no wonder Richard had never heard anything about the Evans family.
Sophia muttered, “Charles isn’t my real dad, so he didn’t have to go out of his way to bring me back. He could’ve just left me in the countryside to fend for myself.
“But he waited until I turned 22 to bring me back. Was there something special about that time?”
Annabelle, with all her years of drama marathons and webnovel experience, said, “Picture this–maybe your real dad was the one who started the Evans Group, but he kicked the bucket before he could enjoy a single dime.
“So, wanting to make sure you’d be okay, he left you with Charles and set up a will to keep you safe.
“And Charles? Talk about worse than a snake. He wanted your fortune but couldn’t be bothered to raise you himself, so he schemed to have you snatched away by traffickers.
“Honestly, they probably knew where you were all along and exactly how you were living–they just didn’t want to deal with you. But as that guarantee in the will was about to run out, they had no choice but to drag you back home.”
Sophia gave her a thumbs–up.
“Guess binge–watching all those webnovels and dramas wasn’t for nothing!” Sophia teased.
Annabelle’s story wasn’t that far from what really happened.
Annabelle smirked proudly and said, “Well, duh! So, the real question is–how do we snatch back what’s rightfully yours?”
Sophia tapped her on the forehead and said, “You greedy little thing. Let me get to the bottom of all this first.”
