Dinner got started in no time.
Except for Kael–the only outsider here–it was all the Evans family at the table.
During the meal, Kael’s gaze barely left Sophia, always drifting back to her.

Even if Sophia was clueless, she could sense that this wasn’t just any dinner–this was an ambush, all set up her.
Margaret stood up, picked up the decanted red wine, and walked over to stand next to Sophia.
“Sophie, these past three years since you came back home, I know I haven’t really been there for you. I’m sorry, sweetheart–I owe you an apology,” Margaret said.
While she spoke, she poured wine into Sophia’s glass. “No matter what, we’re family–nothing can break us

“In this world, you and I are closer than anyone else. Forgive me, Sophie. From now on, I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Sophia stared at the wine in her glass, thinking, ‘After tonight, if I drink this, there may not even be a future for me.’
She lifted her gaze and caught a glint of menace flashing in Margaret’s eyes. Sophia said, her voice steady, “I’ve been taking medicine lately, and the doctor said I’m not supposed to have alcohol.”
At her words, the whole family’s expressions changed in an instant.
David stared right at Sophia, impatience clear in his voice. “Mom went out of her way to pour you that wine. You’re really not gonna drink it?”
“Exactly, Sophia. Mom already apologized to you. If you don’t drink this, she’ll be so hurt,” Emily chimed in, her voice dripping with fake concern.
Margaret quickly put on a wounded look. “Sophie, are you still not willing to forgive me?”
Kael but ed in, trying to add pressure. “Ms. Evans, I don’t know what’s gone down between you and your mom, but she’s already said she’s sorry.
“As the younger one, shouldn’t you at least drink to show some respect?”
Sophia gave a little smirk, lips curling ever so slightly.
‘Wow, they’re so desperate, it’s like they’re scared I won’t notice the wine’s been tampered with,‘ Sophia thought to herself.
But she lifted her glass and rose to her feet. “Since Mrs. Evans poured this herself, it’d be rude for me to refuse. I’ll drink it.”

With that, she tipped her head back and drank down the whole glass of wine.

Everyone stared as Sophia swallowed it, their eyes glinting with smug, knowing smiles–finally looking relieved now that she’d walked right into their trap.
Emily suggested to Sophia, “Here, Sophia, have some. I made all this just for us. I bet you’ve never had a taste, right?”
Sophia just stared and said nothing.
‘Margaret isn’t even my real mom–like I care if she ever cooked for me, she told herself.
But she faked a sad little expression. “Yeah, I guess I really haven’t had the chance.
She took a bite of food, then set her fork down, stood up, and took the decanter from Margaret.
Sophia said, “To be honest, I’ve always dreamed of a day when our family could sit together as one, sharing a meal harmoniously.
“And now that the chance is finally here, I’d like to raise a glass to everyone.”
Sophia picked up the decanter, poured some wine for Charles first, then refilled Margaret’s glass.
“Dad, Mom, thank you for bringing me back from my poor hometown. I’ll never forget the way you looked after me these past three years.”
Her words hit deep, so much so that for an instant, Charles actually looked guilty.
But almost immediately, his gaze hardened as something else crossed his mind.
He knew that once Sophia was out of the way, he could finally relax and enjoy his position as chairman of the Evans Group–without looking over his shoulder.
That was why he refused to let even the tiniest bit of sympathy sway him.
“Silly girl, you’re one of us–an Evans family member. How could we ever just leave you out there on your own?” Charles said.
Sophia smiled, then sidled up to David and poured him a half glass of red wine.
She said, “David, we’ve had a lot of clashes and misunderstandings lately. I know I was being immature and made you angry.
“Just don’t hold it against me, okay? At the end of the day, we’re still family.”
David’s lips twisted into a mocking smirk. ‘Once tonight’s done, Sophia won’t be around to annoy us ever again, he thought, his mood instantly lighter.
“Takes guts to admit your faults. Fine, I’ll forgive you,” David replied, absolutely dripping with sarcasm.
Sophia lowered her gaze, masking the fleeting sneer in her eyes. ‘David, you get a tiny bit of praise and
