Chapter 222
Everyone exchanged glances, and Charles’s face was as cold as ice. “You were in poor health back then.
“The doctor said the air in the city wasn’t good for you, so you had to live in the countryside.”
Sophia let out a cold laugh. “You can’t even be bothered to come up with a decent excuse.”
Margaret shrugged, sounding indifferent. “You haven’t really suffered these years, and you grew up fine. We’ve done our part for your parents.”
Sophia stared at Margaret, who was acting all self-righteous.
She said, “You’ve been living it up on my dad’s inheritance, adopted a girl whose whole life revolves around stealing men, but never cared to raise your own niece.
“If you weren’t hiding something, why all the shady moves?”
Margaret shot Charles a panicked look. “Honey, say something!”
Charles noticed the hickey on Margaret’s neck, and the memory of last night-Kael shamelessly hooking up with her right in front of him-flashed through his mind.
It was like someone stabbed him straight in the heart, but he didn’t have time to bother with this disgraceful man-stealing snake.
Right now, he had to get rid of Sophia, the walking disaster.
“Sophia, listen, back then, I really did everything for your sake. We just put our faith in the wrong people, you know?
“They took our money and totally messed things up,” Charles said, dodging her gaze, trying to sound sincere.
Sophia snorted. “You can cut the crap. Just answer me-three years ago, when you brought me back, what was that agreement you made me sign?”
Back when she first came back, Charles made her sign a bunch of contracts.
She had just returned to the Evans family, and Margaret never liked her, while David wouldn’t even call her his sister.
Charles was the only one who treated her halfway decently.
At the time, just to please them, Sophia signed whatever they handed her-she didn’t even dare to check what she was signing.
Even now, just thinking about it sends a chill through her.
If they’d really had it in for her back then and shoved a slave contract in her face, she’d be totally screwed, all because she was too gullible.
Thankfully, they weren’t that heartless-at least not yet.
David hadn’t expected Sophia to be so aggressive. He slammed his hands down on the coffee table.
“Sophia, don’t go too far! If it weren’t for my parents, you wouldn’t even be here right now!” David snapped.
If Marcus hadn’t left Sophia that massive inheritance before he died, she wouldn’t even be here today.

Sophia narrowed her eyes, then produced a stack of papers. “Here’s the evidence-the Evans Group was up to their necks in debt three years ago.”
Charles’s pupils shrank as he traded looks with David. Both their faces went dark.
“What debt? Stop making things up!” David barked.
Sophia slapped the papers down in front of them. “Talk all you want, but it won’t change the facts. Back then, the Evans Group was about to go under.”
“By then, the Westwood family had basically written off the Evans family and was desperate to break off the engagement.
“You were out of options, so you dragged me back from the small town, just to get your hands on that huge trust fund my dad left for me.” Sophia said, her tone icy and unflinching.
“And that paternity test you shoved at me? It wasn’t about you and me-it was about proving I was my real father’s daughter.
“Once you’re locked in that biological link, you could finally access the inheritance from the trust fund,” Sophia continued, her eyes boring into theirs.
Sophia leaned in, her presence downright overwhelming. “So, is that the truth or not?”
Charles could feel his scalp tingling with guilt under Sophia’s relentless stare, and he immediately averted his eyes, trying to dodge her intimidating gaze.
“I don’t know what you’re even talking about,” he played dumb, forcing a clueless look.
Sophia raised her hand, and one of the bodyguards immediately handed her another stack of documents.
“You really think I’d show up here to call you out without doing my homework?” Sophia shot back, her tone icy and full of confidence.
She slammed the papers down in front of Charles. “Right after I signed that agreement, the Evans Group suddenly landed a 150-million-dollar investment.
“You paid off all your debts and made a dramatic comeback.”
“Uncle Charles, where exactly did that 150 million come from?
