Lucas's eyes narrowed, fury blazing in them, like he wanted to rip Sophia to shreds.
"Sophia, don't you forget—we're still married. As long as I refuse, you'll never get that divorce certificate," he sneered.
Sophia fixed him with an icy stare, watching his smug face. She strode toward him, every step full of cold authority.
Lucas felt her presence pressing down on him, practically suffocating, but he stubbornly stayed rooted to the spot.
He thought she'd yield, but instead, Sophia shot back, "Who needs a divorce certificate? Being a widow works just fine for me."
Lucas's eyes widened as he caught the flash of lethal intent in her gaze, a chill running down his neck.
Sophia stepped away, refusing to waste another word on him. She turned her back and walked off.
Lucas glared at Sophia as she walked away like she didn't care, gripped by a messy mix of love and hate.
He thought, 'She used to love me like crazy. How could she change this much?
'She's obviously just playing mind games to get my attention, trying to make me regret it. She really thinks I can't see through her?'
"Just wait for the cooling-off period. You won't be so arrogant then—bet you'll be on your knees, begging me not to divorce you," Lucas muttered to himself, clinging to that belief.
Lucas managed to convince himself everything was fine, then swung into his car. Just then, his phone started ringing.
He picked up, putting on a cocky swagger. He asked, "What's up?"
"Hey Lucas, feeling bored and lonely? Midnight Vault's got some fresh faces in tonight—come check out the goods and see if anything catches your eye," the caller joked.
Lucas had just gotten knocked down a peg by Sophia, so now he was dying to get his mojo back.
"You got it. Save the best for yours truly—I'll be there in a sec," he said, sounding smug.
After hanging up, Lucas didn't bother looking back at the neighborhood. He gunned the engine and tore off down the road.
Before everyone noticed it, the weekend had arrived.
