"Nope, I'm not," Sophia said, shaking her head. "Oh, right, since you said you wanted to check out the Kavisburg, let's grab tickets today and go hang out in Harbor City for a couple of days."
Annabelle stared at her in disbelief, eyes wide.
"Sophie, weren't you going to wait until you'd finished
your work before taking off for fun?"
Sophia hesitated, clearly torn.
"Yeah, that's true. There were still several experiments waiting for her back at the lab—if she bailed now, she'd be totally buried in work when she got back
"But if I didn't leave now, Richard would come looking for me the moment he woke up.
"What would he even say to me?' Sophia wondered, her stomach churning
Sorry, last night was just an accident. Don't overthink it. Here's 1.5 million-take it as compensation, she imagined him saying, and just the thought stabbed straight through her.
Just picturing Richard throwing those words at her shattered Sophia's heart.
What happened last night was her choice—she might've given herself to him, but she wasn't about to give up her self-respect too.
"Then let's just have some fun for a bit and come back to finish up the projects. You can't live your whole life cooped up in a lab-sometimes you gotta step out and see what's out there," Sophia said, trying to sound breezy.
Annabelle was speechless.
Fine, last night was partly my fault too, Annabelle admitted to herself, a little guilty.
"If Sophie was heading out for a good time, I was absolutely sticking with her—no matter what
The sightseeing car rolled toward the hotel, catching the very first rays of dawn. Sophia sat awkwardly, her whole body tense and stiff.
When the car jolted over a roadblock, she nearly broke out in a cold sweat from the pain.
She didn't make a sound, just wanting to leave this place as quickly as possible.
When the sightseeing car rolled up to the hotel door, Annabelle jumped out, spotting right away that Sophia's clothes were drenched in cold sweat-she looked like she'd just barely survived the night.
Annabelle's face filled with worry as she glanced at her.
"Sophie, are you okay?"
Sophia didn't even know how to answer, mortified.
She braced herself and got out of the car, mumbling,
"My stomach kind of hurts."
Annabelle leaned in, concern and curiosity all over her face. "Stomach hurts? Seriously, did you eat something weird last night or what?"
Annabelle's words hit her right in the feels-Sophia's face went up in flames. 'Why does that sound so
embarrassing?' she groaned inwardly.
"I'm gonna crash on the couch for a bit. Can you grab my stuff from upstairs?" Sophia mumbled, barely audible.
