Chapter 27
The men looked intimidating and dangerous, obviously not someone to be trifled with. Sophia couldn’t tell if they wanted money or her life, so she hesitated to make any sudden moves.
She said, “What do you think you are doing? Kidnapping is a felony. Let me go, now!”
The two bodyguards of David exchanged looks, tempted to explain, but recalled his orders. David intended to teach Sophia a lesson, directing them to bring her without explanation. Thus, they remained silent.
Sophia’s heart sank deeper. “You want money, don’t you? I’ve got money. Please, let me go.”
The men remained silent. It dawned on Sophia that they weren’t after money-they were there to take her life.
She clutched the armrest, fished her phone from her handbag, turned it on, and stealthily messaged Annabelle, sharing her location. [I’m kidnapped. Help me!]
After that, Sophia sat still, careful not to anger the kidnappers. She wasn’t alone; she carried a baby within her.
The car drove through the city, stopping at a private hospital entrance as Sophia’s anxiety spiked. The door opened, and she was roughly pulled out and led inside.
Sophia had no clue what they wanted, who was behind the kidnapping, or why they brought her to the hospital. She wondered if Lucas had discovered her pregnancy and had them take her to a hospital to end it.
The more she thought about it, the more terrified she grew. A chill ran down her spine, and she refused to move another inch.
Ignoring her struggles, the bodyguards dragged her into the elevator. It ascended to the top floor, where they hauled her out and pulled her to a VIP ward door.
The door opened, and Sophia was shoved inside. In the spacious ward, Emily sat on the bed, with Margaret beside her, David leaned against a wall with his arms crossed, and Lucas sat in a chair.
All four glared at Sophia with scorn and hostility, as though she were some kind of unforgivable sinner. Sophia steadied herself and, at the sight, burst into laughter.
“You ungrateful wretch! After causing this disaster, you dare laugh?” Margaret glared at Sophia, seething with rage. She despised Sophia from head to toe.
Sophia’s panic subsided when she saw them. “I thought I was kidnapped. If you wanted me, all you had to do was ask. Why scare me like this?”
David shot her a look of utter disgust at her lack of remorse.
He was a man of action, not words. Anger contorting his face, he marched over, seized Sophia by the nape,
and hauled her to the bedside.
He snapped, “You injured Emily. Apologize to her now.”
Sophia had been terrified throughout, exhausted from the strain. Her earlier bravado was a facade. As David dragged her, she stumbled and fell flat on her face.
She was just about to rise when David shoved her back to her knees.
“If you don’t apologize to Emily today, you won’t get up,” David snarled, his grip crushing Sophia’s neck so tightly that she feared it might snap.
Lucas watched coldly from the side. The thought of Sophia daring to hurt Emily made him want to punish her, to put her in her place, so she wouldn’t forget who she was.
He couldn’t stand her doing well, nor could he bear Charles and Margaret showing her kindness. He feared that if they accepted her, Emily would be forgotten. And he wouldn’t let that happen.
David felt his heart tighten under Sophia’s piercing gaze. Her scornful look seemed to say, “You coward.”

Enraged, he kicked her in the chest.

Sophia couldn’t dodge in time and took a hard kick to the shoulder. Pain shot through her as if her shoulder was breaking. She groaned.
Lucas, who had been silently watching, finally couldn’t take it anymore. He stood up, shielded Sophia, and glared coldly at David. “David, enough.” he said.
David hadn’t expected Lucas to stand up for Sophia. Furious, he demanded, “Lucas, whose side are you on?
“Emily has suffered so much injustice. Instead of seeking justice for her, you’re protecting her abuser?”
His voice was thick with the anger of betrayal. Emily was their little princess, the jewel they’d sworn to protect with their lives. He couldn’t believe Lucas would turn his back on her.
Lucas helped Sophia up and replied, “After all, she’s my wife.”
Sophia’s face ached, and so did her shoulder. Hearing Lucas’s words, she felt like laughing. ‘What a hypocrite! When I was hit, he didn’t intervene. Now that it’s over, he finally remembers I’m his wife, she thought to herself.
