Chapter 73
For the first time in three days, Richard saw Sophia awake.
She was nothing like the adoring, obedient girl he’d seen in her sleep. Now, she seemed aloof and guarded.
“You just woke up. Just stay in bed and don’t walk around on your own. If you need anything, call the carer,” Richard said.
Richard had arranged for a carer to look after her. During those three days she was sleeping, it was the carer who took care of everything.
Sophia didn’t expect him to hire a carer for her. She felt quite complicated.
“Thank you. I’ll pay for the carer myself. Just staying at your place already causes you enough trouble,” Sophia said.
Last time she’d only crashed here for a night, but just a glance at the minimalist decor was enough for Sophia to tell that there was definitely no hostess here.
Therefore, having a woman who was pretty much a stranger living in his home must be awkward for Richard.
Sure, Richard had money to burn and probably didn’t care about the cost, but Sophia just couldn’t bring herself to freeload
off him.
Richard’s eyes grew darker. He said, “It’s fine. You called me ‘Mom‘ while you were out cold. After getting such a big win over you, taking care of you is the least I can do.”
Sophia didn’t know what to say. Her cheeks went bright red, eyes darting around. She didn’t dare look at Richard at all.
Sophia stammered, “Sorry, I really didn’t mean to offend you.”
Richard’s lips curled into a lazy smile as he took a step closer to help her. “You’re just starting to feel better. Don’t make things harder for yourself. Let me get you back to bed.”
He was so clumsy at this that it was almost funny. His movements were so awkward that it looked like he was pulling off a botched kidnapping.
With the distance between them closed, Sophia caught that subtle scent of ocean air and cool mint from him, making her nerves mysteriously unwind.
During those days she’d been out cold, every time that scent of ocean air and cool mint drifted by, she’d felt strangely safe.
“Mr. Sterling, you smell so good,” Sophia blurted out.
But then she instantly realized that her words sounded a bit flirty, so she scrambled to recover, “I mean, what kind of perfume do you wear? I wasn’t trying to be weird or anything.”
Richard’s gaze lingered over her burning ears. He said, “I don’t use any perfume. It’s probably the laundry detergent. You’ll have to ask Jason.”
He really didn’t wear any perfume, but after his clothes were washed, Jason always burnt incense to make them smell good.
She set down a basin of warm water, gently wiped Sophia down, helped her into clean pajamas, and tenderly tended to the wound on her back with a soothing ointment.
Sophia’s stomach gave a loud rumble, making her flush with embarrassment. Noticing that, the carer, Daisy, grinned.
She said, “There’s some soup simmering in the kitchen. Let me go get you a bowl.”
Sophia really didn’t want soup. It would just mean more trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and honestly, every bit of moving around was a struggle for her right now.
“Daisy, can I have spaghetti instead?” Sophia asked.
Daisy smiled. “Of course. I’ll cook some up right away, but you’ll have to wait a bit.”
“It’s fine. Sorry to trouble you,” Sophia said.
Daisy waved it off, grinning. “Not a big deal. Mr. Sterling pays me really well, so looking after you is just part of the job.”
