Chapter 78
Emily watched as Sophia, with just a few quick lines, managed to muddy the waters again. Internally, she cursed Sophia for being so cunning, and honestly, her parents and brother couldn’t be easier to fool.
She thought, ‘Come on, what’s there to be afraid of? A paternity test? Sophia’s basically just the Evans family’s daughter. What can possibly change that?‘
“Mom, Dad, David, weren’t we just saying Sophia should go apologize to Lucas?” Emily cut in, forcefully dragging the conversation back on track.
Charles, eager to change the subject, quickly said, “Sophia, since you did something wrong, you should go apologize to Lucas and ask for his forgiveness.”
Margaret said, “That’s right. You two are a couple. I’m sure Lucas will forgive you.”
David looked at Sophia, who didn’t react at all, and thought, ‘She’s still acting like nothing’s wrong, huh?”
He rolled up his sleeves and said, “Mom, Dad, why bother talking to her? Just haul her over to Lucas. Let him do whatever he wants–yell, hit her, whatever. As long as it satisfies him.”
Sophia’s eyes were dripping with sarcasm.
She thought, ‘Look at them—my so–called family. The truth means nothing to them. All they ever care about is what benefits them.
‘So what if I was wronged? So what if I lost my child, or Lucas shattered three of my ribs?
‘None of it matters to them. As long as their profits are untouched, why would they ever bother with me?”
Annabelle heard Sophia laugh, and when she glanced over, she saw the pain and biting sarcasm in Sophia’s eyes. It felt like a punch to the gut.
“Sophie…” Annabelle murmured.
She just couldn’t make sense of it. She thought, ‘The Evans family spent all that effort finding their true daughter, only to turn around and treat her like garbage–tormenting her at every chance instead of actually caring for her.
“Seriously, what kind of twisted psychology was that?‘
David kept advancing, his voice full of threat. “Sophia, do yourself a favor and come with us quietly while we’re still asking nicely.”
Annabelle wasn’t about to just stand by and watch the Evans family haul Sophia away. She threw herself in front of Sophia, arms out wide like a mother hen guarding her chick, blocking their path with unwavering resolve.
She said, “David, if you want Sophie, you’ll have to walk over my dead body first. As long as I’m alive, there’s no way I’m letting you take her!”
When Sophia saw David lay his hands on Annabelle, her eyes flashed with hatred. She said, “David, let go of her. I’ll go with
Annabelle wheezed, “Sophie, don’t go…”
The Westwood family would not show her mercy. If Sophia went there, she’d be throwing herself straight into the lion’s den.
Sophia spotted the fresh bruises on Annabelle’s neck, and her fist clenched tight at her side. Hatred surged inside her.
She thought, ‘Why does David get to hurt me, hurt everyone close to me, and never once worry about consequences? It’s just because I’m powerless–easy for him to push around?
‘If I don’t get stronger, this cycle will never end. No matter how much pain I take, no one’s ever there to hear me out or help
me.‘
With pain shooting through her body, Sophia forced herself to walk over and gently help Annabelle up off the floor.
She said, “Annabelle, this is just how my life goes. Buy that chess set for me, and give it to Mr. Sterling. Help me thank him for taking me in these days.”
The protection Richard gave her was always just temporary. And now, its time had run out. All that was left was for her to face the train wreck of her own life.
