Chapter 90
Richard turned his head to glance at Sophia, who walked shoulder to shoulder with him. The quiet strength in her gaze
struck a chord with him.
Even though she’d gone through so much, Sophia never seemed to grumble about her life.
Whenever she talked about those hardships, she treated them more like funny stories than tales of misery.
Sophia gazed at the endless green mountains, her eyes thoughtful. “Growing up in the countryside isn’t hard at all. I’d say it’s even richer and more exciting than city life,” she said.
She thought, ‘City kids bounce between school, cram classes, or extracurricular activities. Most of them have never climbed a mountain or waded into a river to catch fish. It seems that everyone misses out on something!
“Mr. Sterling, you must think this is all pretty dull, huh?” Sophia asked while tilting her head toward Richard, her smile a touch shy.
Richard’s eyes were deep and thoughtful. He let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. Then he replied, “Not at all. It’s interesting. I’ve never had a childhood like yours.”
Sophia paused, her heart fluttering as she almost got lost in his charming smile.
Richard caught her gaze and arched his eyebrow with a teasing grin. “What is it? Did I get something on my face, or are you admiring me?” he teased.
Sophia quickly shook her head, turning away and pretending to take in the scenery, but her curiosity got the better of her, and she found herself sneaking glances back at him.
“Mr. Sterling, you have a great smile. You should show it off more often,” Sophia said softly.
Sophia thought, ‘A smile makes someone look younger, but Richard always looks so serious, making him look older than his actual age.
Richard gave a faint smirk and felt in the mood to talk.
“If I start smiling too much, I’ll lose my intimidating vibe. Then nobody will be scared of me anymore,” Richard joked.
Sophia hadn’t expected him to think like that. ‘No wonder all those big shots always keep a straight face, she thought.
She’d always figured they weren’t the smiling kind, but now she realized they were probably trying to maintain their air of authority.
“Then you can feel free to smile more whenever you’re with me. I promise I won’t stop being intimidated, even if you flash that smile, Sophia teased.
Richard glanced at her phone and caught her checking out his picture. “It was a landscape I snapped one day. What’s up? Does it seem familiar?” he asked.
“It looks familiar. Where did you take that?” Sophia asked.
Richard shook his head and replied, “I think it was somewhere in a little mountain village. I went there with our company convoy to deliver supplies after an earthquake.
“It rained right after the quake. Then the sun came out, and this big rainbow arched across the sky. I couldn’t resist snapping a photo.”
Sophia felt a sudden jolt in her chest. “An earthquake?” she echoed.
“Yeah, I can’t remember which year it was,” Richard replied, “I thought that photo had an atmospheric feel to it, so I ended up using it as my profile picture.”
Sophia replied with a nod, “It does have a nice vibe. Have you studied photography?”
“Yeah, I have. Want to let me show you what I can do?” Richard offered?
