After weighing her options, Juniper finally looked at Landon, her expression a blend of frustration and forced humility.
It was as if she believed Landon had the ultimate say in how this mess would be handled.
“Landon, we truly didn’t expect Noelle to act so recklessly, to even joke about something like this. Thankfully, Xander wasn’t seriously hurt, so let’s just put this behind us, shall we?”
Landon arched an eyebrow. “Put it behind us?”
Juniper nodded, her embarrassment barely concealed.
“Noelle’s only turned out this way because we’ve spoiled her. Once we’re home, we’ll make sure she understands the seriousness of her actions. We’re truly sorry for all the trouble she’s caused you and the hospital, Zinnia.”
Despite addressing Zinnia and the hospital, Juniper’s words were directed entirely at Landon—almost as if his forgiveness would magically resolve everything.
Landon let out a low, humorless chuckle.
He lazily lifted his gaze to meet Juniper’s eyes. “But I’m not the victim here. It’s not my call to make.”
A flicker of unease crossed Juniper’s face. “I... see…”
He understood what Landon was getting at. Only then did he reluctantly turn his attention to Zinnia. “Zinnia—”
“We can leave it at that,” Zinnia cut in before he could finish.
“But my condition stands: Noelle needs to go online and clarify the truth, clear my name and the hospital’s. Do that, and I’ll consider the matter settled.”
She gave a small, inscrutable smile, her eyes fixed on Juniper, who was clearly desperate to shield his daughter.
“And as for poor Xander—well, if even his own parents can turn a blind eye to what happened, then what right do the rest of us have to care?”
The implication was impossible to miss.
But now he saw that she had a temper too, and sharp edges she’d never shown before.
Those barbs weren’t just aimed at outsiders—they pricked him as well, cutting unexpectedly deep.
He lowered his gaze, a faint, silent smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“No way! I’m not posting any kind of apology online. We’re already letting the hospital off the hook, so why are you making such a big deal out of this?”
Before Juniper could speak, Noelle jumped in, her voice full of venom and barely contained resentment as she glared at Zinnia.
Zinnia met her gaze coolly. “You’re letting the hospital off because none of this was ever our fault. But your actions damaged my reputation and the hospital’s. Just because you’re dropping it doesn’t mean I have to.”
With that, Zinnia rose from her chair.
“Noelle, I’m giving you a chance. If you don’t know how to clear things up, I’ll be happy to do it for you.”
