Time-Limited Love: A Contract Expired, Not Renewed novel Chapter 188

Zinnia gave a careless little laugh. “Once the divorce is settled, they’ll find out soon enough. No point upsetting them before that.”

Zoey nodded in understanding. “As long as you know what you’re doing.”

“What about you and Chandler? Any progress on your divorce?”

Zoey shrugged, her tone light and easy. “He refuses to agree, no matter what I say. I’ve already filed the papers. The court date should be soon.”

Getting a divorce granted in the first trial was rare.

Zoey knew that. Zinnia did too.

That was exactly why Zinnia planned to cooperate fully with Landon for the next month—if they could end things amicably, there was no need to drag it through the courts.

“Good luck,” Zinnia said with a warm smile.

Zoey grinned back. “Right back at you.”

That afternoon, Zinnia didn’t have any surgeries scheduled, so she spent the whole day seeing patients in the clinic. By the time she finished with her last appointment, it was nearly the end of her shift. She packed up her things and headed back to her rented apartment, where she poured some kibble into Dapper’s bowl.

“I have to go out tonight,” she told her dog, crouching down to scratch behind his ears. “Zoey will come by to keep you company soon. Be good and wait for me, okay?”

Dapper cocked his head as if he only half understood, but he still gave her hand a grateful lick.

Just as she finished settling Dapper, her phone rang. Predictably, it was Landon.

“Give me a few minutes. I’ll be right there,” Zinnia said, covering the receiver to murmur softly to Dapper, “Be good and wait for me. I’ll be back before you know it.”

Confused, Zinnia tapped on his window. The glass slid down slowly, revealing Landon’s face twisted in a mix of resentment and wounded pride.

Seeing his expression, Zinnia assumed he was just getting impatient. She kept her voice calm and apologetic. “Sorry. I had to run home and tidy up a bit. Didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”

Oh, tidy up?

Wasn’t she just tangled up with that pampered mutt she kept at home? Was that useless freeloader just lying around, waiting for Zinnia to come back and feed him? What on earth did she see in him?

Where had Landon gone wrong? How had he lost to a man who lived off a woman’s charity?

The more he stewed, the more furious he became. He simply couldn’t understand how he’d ended up losing to such a spineless, good-for-nothing man.
