Just as Zinnia and Yuri settled into the car, a soft meow interrupted the quiet.
Zinnia blinked, caught off guard, and glanced at the man in the passenger seat.
“You have a cat now?”
Yuri set his backpack down, revealing a white Devon Rex nestled inside, its neck adorned with a delicate pearl collar.
He gently scooped the cat out, stroked its head, and, taking its little paw in his hand, waved it at Zinnia.
“Cozy, say hello.”
As if understanding, the cat let out a tiny, sweet meow.
The soft, kittenish sound melted Zinnia’s heart.
“Cozy? That’s its name?”
She took the kitten’s paw, unable to resist giving the plush pad a gentle squeeze, her tone tinged with surprise.
“Mhm. She’s my precious girl.”
Still scratching Cozy’s chin, Zinnia said, “She must be fated to meet me. When I was little, my dad used to call me Cozy too.”
Her attention was wholly on the kitten, missing the brief flicker of discomfort that crossed Yuri’s face.
“Oh? Really? What a coincidence,” he replied, kissing the cat’s head, his gaze flickering to Zinnia’s smiling face. The faintest hint of a smile tugged at his lips.
“Cozy, Cozy, it’s destiny. We even share the same nickname.”
“Meow~ Meow~”
Zinnia was utterly charmed, her smile growing even brighter.
“Alright, enough playtime for now. Let’s drop your brother Dapper off at the hotel first,” she said, starting the car and heading downtown.
Yuri’s hotel was right next to Veridian University—not far from Zinnia’s place either.
What were the odds that she’d give it to someone else, and today of all days?
Landon’s jaw was set, his expression growing darker by the minute.
Zinnia’s WhatsApp profile remained stubbornly silent.
He picked up his phone, hesitated for a long moment, then finally called her.
The line connected, but rang and rang—Zinnia didn’t answer.
A tight, restless frustration throbbed at his temples. He tried again. And again. Still, nothing.
“Still no word from Zinnia?” Connor asked quietly as Landon returned to the living room, his face like thunder.
Landon said nothing.
“Maybe I should just ask my wife,” Chandler muttered, pulling out his phone to text Zoey.
