He had believed everything Noelle told him. The only thing he’d never considered was that so many people could be conspiring with Noelle to deceive him.
To repay what he thought was her life-saving kindness, he’d spent those two years lifting the Jensen family’s business to a place of real influence in Veridian City.
If the Jensens really wanted to pay off those specialists, it was entirely possible.
As these thoughts churned in Landon’s mind, Charles’s voice continued to echo through the silent office.
“I found out that Noelle wasn’t in Australia for her health.”
As he spoke, Charles handed Landon a file.
Landon took it and began to read.
Inside were details of Noelle’s life abroad: smoking, clubbing, jetting off to vacation after vacation around the world.
All the while Landon had pictured her under the care of world-class doctors, she had been living a life of reckless abandon.
“Mr. Ford, we also discovered that the student who jumped from the building lived just down the street from where your accident happened. After her death, her mother vanished as well—we’re still looking into her whereabouts.”
“What’s the school saying?” Landon asked, his tone stony.
Knowing Landon was behind the investigation, the school wouldn’t dare cover anything up.
“The student was in Noelle’s class. During that time, she suffered relentless bullying from Noelle and her clique. But because the Jensen family has so much power and influence, and... well...” Charles hesitated, glancing at Landon before swallowing the rest of his words.
But Landon understood.
Everyone knew that behind the Jensens, there was the Ford family.
“The school didn’t want to offend the Jensens over a poor student, nor did they want the scandal to damage their reputation. So they just swept everything under the rug.”
When he finished, Charles looked conflicted.
Truth was, what Noelle had done wasn’t something that could be easily hidden.
If Mr. Ford wanted answers, he could find them in an instant.
[Would you like to have lunch with me today?]
Just as he expected, the message disappeared into the void, with no reply even after hours.
It was nearly the end of the semester. Although Zinnia was filling in as a substitute, she didn’t have many classes to teach.
After her single morning lecture, she had the rest of the morning free.
When she returned to her office, Dapper was still there, playing quietly with his ball.
Seeing her, he grinned his doggy grin and wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.
A short while later, the open door to her office was tapped lightly.
Yuri stood there, books in hand, sunlight spilling around him, casting a golden glow at his back.
He said with a warm smile, stepping inside. “Mind if I borrow a corner of your office for a bit?”
