The word “divorced” was all it took to ignite the anger Landon had been struggling to keep in check.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you hoping I’ll leave Cozy?”
Landon’s voice turned icy, his tone sharp and unyielding.
In contrast, Yuri seemed completely unfazed, his expression calm as he replied, “I’m just stating the facts, Mr. Ford. No need to get worked up.”
A dangerous glint flickered in Landon’s eyes as he fixed Yuri with a cold stare. His jaw clenched tight, he locked eyes with Yuri’s faintly amused gaze, his voice dropping even lower.
“Even if I were to divorce Cozy, until the very last moment, we’re still husband and wife in every sense. Yuri, if you’re thinking of taking advantage of the situation, you might want to remember your place.”
As Landon finished, the smile at the corner of Yuri’s lips faded just a little.
The tension between the two was palpable, and Zinnia frowned, uneasy.
Worried that Yuri might get dragged into trouble on her account, Zinnia quickly stepped in, pulling Yuri behind her as she looked straight at Landon.
“Just because you act a certain way, doesn’t mean everyone else does too.”
Landon stared at Zinnia, registering the defiance in her stance as she shielded Yuri. The brightness in his eyes dimmed all at once.
“Don’t insult me—and don’t insult Yuri, either.”
No sooner had she spoken than Yuri glanced over at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. Pressing his lips together, he thought to himself, This time, Landon’s ‘insult’ actually hits the mark.
Landon picked up on something else in her words, though. She spoke as if she and Yuri were naturally on the same side—while he, her lawful husband, was being left out in the cold.
Zinnia’s tone was sincere—there was no sarcasm, no deliberate dig at Landon. Yet, the words stung all the same, and Landon couldn’t help but hear the accusation in them.
And the bitter truth was, he’d set this example himself; he couldn’t refute a single word.
“If you’re so insistent that we’re husband and wife, then shouldn’t we act as one? As my husband, you ought to stand with me and thank Yuri as well, don’t you think, Mr. Ford?”
Landon’s face went ghostly pale. His lips trembled as he tried—several times—to say something, but nothing came out.
All he could think was, if Yuri hadn’t been there to take care of her during those two weeks in Norway, how would she have survived?
The thought alone was enough to suffocate him beneath a mountain of guilt.
