“I never thought I’d see my brother lying here like this.” Leanna’s voice choked as she spoke. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have spent so much time trying to make him angry.”
Zinnia’s eyes welled up in response. “I’m so sorry. If he hadn’t been trying to save me…”
Leanna quickly waved her hand. “No, Zinnia, it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have predicted the earthquake, and besides…” She paused, her gaze returning to Landon. “He chose to do it. Even though he’s lying there now, I know he must be happy that he was able to save you.”
She looked at Zinnia, hesitating for a moment before finally speaking. “I know… I know I used to say terrible things about him, about how he treated you because of that awful snake, Noelle, but…”
Tears streamed down her face as she gripped Zinnia’s arm. “You can call this guilt-tripping if you want, but for the sake of my brother who risked his life for you… if he wakes up, will you give him another chance? Please?”
She finished, not daring to meet Zinnia’s eyes. She knew it was wrong to pressure her like this, but her heart ached for her brother.
Zinnia didn’t answer. She just stared quietly at the man in the hospital bed, wondering when, or if, he would ever wake up. She remembered what she’d told him when they were buried under the rubble—
*If we get out of this alive, I’ll give you another chance.*
At the time, her only thought was to keep him awake, to stop him from losing consciousness. So she had said those words.
But thinking back on it now, was that really the only reason?
