Liliana's voice was ice. "Don't call me your sister-in-law. I've broken off the engagement with your brother. Whoever his future wife is, it won't be me. That title isn't mine to bear."
A collective gasp went through the crowd.
The news of Liliana and Linton's broken engagement hadn't been publicly announced, so most people dismissed her words as another one of the heiress's tantrums, aimed at Isabella.
Someone in the crowd muttered under their breath, "Oh, please. Who is she kidding? Acting like the engagement is really off. We all know what she's like."
Liliana was not in the mood to be trifled with.
With a chilling smile, she walked straight to the woman and singled her out. "Are you deaf? Or do you just not understand plain English? For a grown woman, you have the comprehension skills of a second-grader. What was it, were you raised by your own afterbirth?"
The verbal assault was swift and brutal.
Liliana had been in a good mood lately. She was starting her own company, working with like-minded people on something she loved, had reconciled with her long-estranged mentor, and was surrounded by a loving family. Away from Linton and the toxic swamp of the Cooper family, she had realized something profound. It had never been raining outside; she was the one who had trapped herself in a self-made abyss.
But some people just couldn't stand to see her happy.
The woman Liliana had called out was Genevieve Lancaster, a close friend of Isabella's and a princess of another prominent Crownport family.
Humiliated, her face flushed red and her eyes welled up with tears. Her lips trembled with rage. "Liliana, you've gone too far! How dare you insult me like that in front of everyone! You have no class!"
"And you do? Whispering behind people's backs? Why don't you say it to my face?" Liliana shot back with a smirk. "If you're so righteous, go tell Linton what you think. Go demand justice for your dear friend. If you can convince him to agree to break off the engagement once and for all, I might even thank you for it."
