“Did I do something to offend you before you were adopted by the Cooper family? Why else would you hate me so much, spending over a decade working against me? Scheming to make everyone around me misunderstand and isolate me?”
Liliana found her mind was surprisingly clear.
Many things she had obsessed over in the past now seemed perfectly understandable when viewed from an outside perspective.
Isabella’s eyes were frigid, colder than a snow-covered mountain in the dead of winter.
She was silent for a long moment before letting out a sinister laugh. “Does hating someone need a reason?”
“Liliana, I just don’t like you. When your life is miserable, I feel good. Is that so hard to understand?”
Liliana understood.
She mulled it over for a second, then said seriously, “Got it. You’re just a naturally terrible person. I was overcomplicating things.”
Isabella’s face changed, her eyes darkening with malice.
Liliana picked up her bag, ready to leave.
As her slender fingers closed around the doorknob, she suddenly turned back to Isabella, her voice laced with meaning.
“You don’t actually love Linton, either. You just use him as a tool to get under my skin.”
Isabella went stock‑still.
She let out a contemptuous sneer. “Are you trying to comfort yourself?”
“If you want to admit defeat and concede that you can’t compete with me, you can just get on your knees and apologize. You don’t have to be so stubborn just to save face.”
Liliana couldn’t even be bothered with her. “I’m leaving. You can continue living in your fantasy world.”
“Oh, and by the way, with or without Linton, my life is far more fulfilling than yours.”
Liliana flashed a brilliant smile, radiating an unshakable confidence. “If my happiness makes you unhappy, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck.”
“Isabella, you’re just going to have to be unhappy for the rest of your life!”
“Liliana!”
Isabella’s expression contorted instantly, becoming utterly hideous.
