"Don't forget what you promised me all those years ago," Damian said, his displeasure evident in his icy tone.
"I asked you to take over the family's shady dealings, and you refused, claiming that getting involved in the underworld would put your little fiancée in danger."
"You dismantled the entire criminal network I spent years building, disbanded all my organizations, all so you could get engaged to her. Do you have any idea how much that cost the Cooper family?"
By the end, Damian's cold voice had risen, laced with barely concealed fury. It was clear he was still incensed over Linton's decision to sacrifice the family's illicit enterprises for Liliana.
Linton pressed his lips together. "Dad, we live in a civilized world now. There are some lines we shouldn't cross."
Damian's business was far too dangerous, operating in the gray areas of the law. If you play with fire, you're going to get burned. Linton feared the inevitable consequences. If something happened to him, what would become of Liliana? She couldn't live without him; she would be terrified. What if she got caught in the crossfire?
He couldn't take that risk. The mere thought made his scalp tingle with fear.
But Damian's unsavory operations were extensive. Linton had started cleaning house when he was just twenty, still in college. It took him until he was twenty-four to even begin to get things under control. The underworld had long memories and even longer lists of enemies.
Retaliation was inevitable.
From twenty-four to twenty-six, he spent another two years hunting down every last one of those enemies, crushing them, and ensuring they were locked away for good, never to cause trouble again.
By the time he had neutralized every potential threat to Liliana, finally giving himself a clean slate so he could marry the girl he had loved for years...
She told him she didn't love him anymore.
She sold their marital home, threw the engagement ring into King's Moat, and with a brutal finality, insisted on leaving him.
He couldn't accept it.
He would never, ever accept that this was how their story ended.
