*Slam.*
Liliana shut the door in his face.
Mrs. Hart, who was wiping her hands in the living room, looked at her with concern. “Liliana, I think that young man, Liam, has good intentions...”
“Mom.”
Liliana cut her off.
Her expression was calm as she said evenly, “I’m not ready to think about any of that right now.”
Liliana made a call and had security bars installed on all the balcony windows of her small apartment.
She stood watching the installer, her eyes fixed on the windowsill. The man, assuming she was worried about the quality of his work, spoke to her.
“Miss, you can rest assured. I’ve been in this business for decades. The quality is guaranteed.”
Liliana’s lips curved into a faint smile. “No, sir, you’ve misunderstood.”
“I was just wondering... could we line the windowsill with broken glass? You know, to deter any late-night climbers.”
The installer stared at her.
Was she serious?
He gave a polite, strained smile and explained patiently, “That might be difficult. This windowsill is too narrow.”
“But if Miss Hart is worried about someone, er... climbing through the window, the security bars should be more than enough.”
Liliana’s gaze fell, a touch of disappointment in her eyes.
Oh.
What a shame.
By the time she had paid the installer and seen him out, it was already late afternoon.
She turned back inside to see Mrs. Hart in the living room, assembling a package.
Curious, Liliana went over to look and was surprised by what she saw.
“Mom, where did this come from?”
Mrs. Hart paused, her hands on the pink baby stroller. She looked just as surprised. “Liliana, isn’t this what you bought at the mall and had delivered?”
Liliana’s lips parted, and she frowned slightly.
She looked at the stroller her mother was holding, her mind racing. It was true, this was the exact stroller she and Helena had admired at the mall a few days ago.
But she hadn’t bought it.
That left only one possibility.
Liliana turned to get her phone.
