Can you still remember?
That very first image you saw when you were a child, when your memories first began?
Liliana could.
She remembered lying in her crib, the sound of cheerful adult laughter floating around her.
It was an afternoon when the sky was exceptionally bright and vast.
That was her first memory.
Liliana must have been about two years old.
When she blinked her hazy eyes open, two blurry figures were standing before her.
Linton and Matthew, both looking down at her with curiosity.
At the time, they were just two young, innocent boys.
When Matthew saw she was awake, he cooed and opened his arms, wanting to hold her. He smiled gently.
“Oh, our little princess Liliana is awake.”
Even as a child, Linton had a cold, detached expression, as if he were worlds away from everyone else.
At Matthew’s words, he instinctively glanced over.
The boy’s deep, narrow eyes gazed at Liliana for a long time.
Linton looked down at her, then, after a moment, he turned to Matthew, his young voice cool and crisp.
“She wants us to hold her.”
If you listened closely.
Beneath that cool, youthful tone, there was a hidden trace of tenderness, almost imperceptible.
It was like the softest water in the world, warm and comforting, enveloping Liliana’s entire world.
“Bo-bo... boo... boo...”
A two-year-old can’t speak very well.
Lying in her crib, Liliana babbled, her baby talk barely forming the sound of “brother.”
Linton and Matthew both leaned in closer, peering at her with curiosity.
Matthew smiled gently. “You want to hold her, or should I?”
Linton lowered his eyes, his voice cool. “Let her choose.”
Matthew paused, then chuckled. “Good idea.”
They both extended their hands to Liliana at the same time.
Matthew cooed, “Good Liliana, sweet Liliana, which brother do you want to hold you?”
