Liliana's gaze dropped. “No, my baby's...” Father. The word remained unspoken.

Suddenly, a familiar, cool, deep voice sounded from behind her. “Liliana...”

Startled, Liliana turned around and saw Linton standing there. He seemed to have lost a lot of weight, his deep, narrow eyes filled with a dark, complicated emotion she couldn't decipher.

She smiled at the other pregnant woman, preparing to say her goodbyes. The woman, however, assumed they were a family. She covered her mouth with her hand and giggled, “Your husband is so handsome, and you're so beautiful. Your baby is going to be the cutest in the world!” Her voice was tinged with envy.

“He's not...” Liliana began.

“Liliana,” Linton said, stepping forward slowly. His leg was still not right. He'd left the hospital prematurely after breaking it in the fall from the second-story window, and it hadn't fully healed. The tall, slender man limped, his brow furrowing in pain with every step. His face was pale, drained of all color. Yet he pushed on, stopping beside Liliana.

He carefully lowered his gaze to look at their baby. After a long moment of silence, his lips trembled as he spoke, his voice hoarse. “I... I bought some clothes for the baby...”
