Liam’s heart hammered in his chest.
He cautiously lifted his eyes, stealing a glance at the bright, lovely girl beside him.
Liliana blinked, sensing his hesitant, probing gaze, and paused for a second.
She thought for a moment, then clapped her hands in a moment of realization.
She reached out a soft, warm hand and gently patted his broad, lean shoulder comfortingly. “Don’t worry about it.”
“It doesn’t matter where you come from.”
Liam froze on the spot.
Just then, sunlight streamed through the window, bathing Liliana’s fair face in a warm glow.
In the soft light, even the fine hairs on her cheeks seemed to be haloed in a gentle luminescence.
Liliana paused again, feeling that her simple words of comfort might not be enough.
After a few seconds of silence, a wide smile bloomed on her face.
It was a radiant smile, as brilliant as the winter sun, instantly dispelling all darkness. It felt as if the very air around them had lost its biting chill.
She blinked playfully and said, “Keep it up, Liam.”
“I’m rooting for you!”
Liliana made a small fist and gave him a little cheer, looking as adorable as a bunny.
Liam lowered his gaze to look at her, remaining silent for a long time.
Finally.
He let out a soft chuckle.
He clutched his stomach as his laughter grew louder, until he was breathless, wiping away a tear from the corner of his eye.
Yes.
This was the Liliana he knew.
She would never be like the others.
They despised him simply because he was the Grayson family’s dirty little secret—the illegitimate son, abandoned overseas.
He was kept far away from the family, out of his father’s sight and mind.
And so, the servants, knowing he was alone with no parents to protect him, bullied him relentlessly.
They beat and insulted him, threw him out into the freezing snow at night, forcing him to fight with stray dogs for scraps of food.
They made him kneel outside in the cold, damp rain, forcing him to kowtow and beg for forgiveness.
