Linton paused for a fraction of a second, then gave a barely perceptible nod.
Liliana stared at him, stunned. A fresh wave of sorrow washed over her, and she couldn't stop the tears from flowing again.
She looked utterly devastated, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. Covering her eyes with her hands, she spoke in a helpless, broken voice.
“You all... you all knew...”
“You kept it all from me? Fine... just keep it all from me!”
“What do you take me for? A fool you can just play with?”
Her cries grew more pitiful, her nose turning red, a sight that would break anyone's heart.
Linton scrambled to wipe her tears away but didn't dare touch her. Guilt and a storm of other complex emotions churned inside him, making his chest feel like it was about to burst.
He tried to soothe her, his voice gentle and patient. “Please, Liliana, don’t cry, don’t cry...”
“You’re right, it was our fault. We shouldn’t have hidden it from you.”
“Liliana, please stop crying. It’s killing me. I promise I’ll never hide anything from you again, okay? Whatever you want to know, I’ll tell you...”
“It was my fault... our fault. We thought we were doing what was best for you, but we never once considered your feelings. We never asked if it was what you wanted. We just made decisions for you behind your back...”
Linton spoke until his throat was dry, so frantic he felt like crying himself.
He could never bear to see her shed a tear.
She was a delicate girl, prone to crying. In the past, she would burst into tears at the slightest provocation, always needing him to coax and comfort her.
Linton was an expert at consoling Liliana.
And sure enough.
After his soothing words, Liliana began to feel a little better.
She had never been an unreasonable person.
