By now, the nurses had moved old Mr. Cooper to his private room.
Mrs. Hart no longer felt the need to hold back. She took Liliana’s hand, her voice soft and comforting. "Alright, the engagement is off, and that's that. We're better off without them. I'll find someone better for you."
"You know, I think that young man from the Briarwood family is quite nice. His mother and I are best friends. If you're willing, I can arrange for you two to meet."
Linton froze.
A bitter smile twisted his lips. So, this was how it was going to be. Not only was Liliana determined to break up with him, but now his own mother-in-law was encouraging his fiancée to openly scout for other men.
Was he invisible?
Linton’s face hardened. He turned, intending to take Liliana's hand and coax his girl back. Why look for some other guy when the perfect one was standing right here?
But as he took a step forward, Isabella moved to block his path.
Her eyes were red-rimmed, her voice so gentle it seemed to tremble on the verge of tears. "Brother… since Grandpa is out of danger now, could you come with me to the pediatric ward? I need to check on Logan."
She looked utterly pitiful and helpless, her eyes swimming with tears that could break any man's heart.
"Logan's fever was so high he had convulsions. I'm so scared. His father passed away just a few months ago, leaving us all alone. We have no one else to rely on. I… I just don't know what else to do."
Isabella covered her face and began to sob, her thin shoulders shaking uncontrollably. "And the Graysons are watching my every move. If I make one mistake, they'll try to take my son away. Brother… what am I going to do?"
It was a masterful, well-rehearsed pity play.
Liliana watched, almost impressed. She gave Isabella a mental thumbs-up.
With a performance like that, she thought with a deadpan expression, that bastard was sure to soften up and go with her. It was always the same story.
