Linton lowered his eyes, his voice a low plea. "Liliana, don't do this."
"Let's just talk properly."
His words sounded weak, hollow. If one listened closely, they could hear a faint tremor in his voice.
It was as if he sensed something was irrevocably broken. Beyond begging her not to be difficult, his impoverished vocabulary could find no other words to convince her, to keep her from shutting him out completely.
Liliana, however, wasn't angry anymore. Perhaps she had been worn down by his behavior for so long that she was numb to it.
She curved her lips into a smile, her tone flat. "I already told you, unless you agree to end the engagement, we have nothing to talk about."
He lunged forward, his hand tightening as he pulled her closer, their faces inches apart, their noses almost touching.
Warm breath ghosted across their skin. They stared at each other, gazes locked, neither willing to back down, neither willing to be the first to look away. They were both impossibly stubborn.
An oppressive silence descended.
After a long moment, the corners of Linton's eyes were red, his chest rising and falling heavily. When he finally spoke, the words seemed torn from his throat. "Give me one good reason why you're so set on this. Otherwise, I won't accept it."
"I don't love you anymore."
The words came without hesitation. Her own eyes were red, her chest heaving, her pale lips trembling as she forced a smile.
"Linton, I was wrong before. It was my mistake to chase after you so shamelessly. But I know better now. I don't dare to love you anymore. I don't want to love you anymore. Can't you be the bigger person, and just let me go?"
She intentionally made herself sound pathetic, lowering her stance until she was practically groveling.
To make him agree to end the engagement, she was willing to sacrifice every last shred of her pride.
