Chapter Hundred and Eight
"I’m leaving." Asli announced as she picked the coat hanging but the chair.
"That’s mine." The doctor claimed and Asli looked at her like she just muttered a foreign language. "Why do you find the need to leave here with my costs?"
"You should just get enough if it’s something she does." Markus joked and he watched as the other woman folded her arms in disbelief.
Markus gave a little laugh and the other woman joined.
They then bid each other goodbye.
"How do you feel?" Markus asked Asli out of the blue, his tone suddenly shifting to seriousness.
"I do not feel pain." She lied and he knew she lied.
"You are human and it is okay to show it. You have a beautiful relationship with your cousin." Markus said but she didn’t respond.
She scoffed, then relaxed herself more into the seat and closed her eyes.
Silence stretched for a while before she spoke, "It was my fault."
Now that caught him off guard. What was her fault? What did she do? Was that the reason why she looked vulnerable when Hilde mentioned it?
"When I found out about them, I should have kept quiet. But I angrily tied the man to a chair. I only wanted to scare him into leaving her alone. However, her father found out and wondered why I had captured Hilde’s bodyguard. Hilde told them he wasn’t just her bodyguard. Her father gave her his gun to shoot her or her younger brother would die." Asli sighed, as if she was remembering the scene as if it were just yesterday.
He could tell she hadn’t forgiven herself for that. Her voice sounded pained. And he wished he could do or even say something to make her feel better.
"It wasn’t your fault. You had the best intentions and if she hadn’t said who he was to her, maybe he would’ve still been alive. But then, one way or the other they would’ve been caught. It would still have been the same outcome." Markus shot her a small smile when she opened herself and turned to look at him.
"Maybe you are right but I had wanted to be the one to kill him." Asli confessed and a surprised laughter almost choked in his throat.
He thought she was feeling bad for what had happened, not knowing...
Asli sat upright in the chair as her tone became louder. "Don’t be surprised. I hear the names people call me. I am not far from them. Not any different, I mean. If anything, I’m more than that. We were both nineteen years old and you know how the Mafia fathers are. They like to compare kids of the same age. I watched her try to out work me. Fine, I have my insecurities..."
Asli had insecurities? That was news to him. The most surprising part was, she was speaking to him... telling him things. This was the most he had ever heard her speak.
"... But I never saw her as a competition. Not that she wasn’t good enough. She was good. But I was and still am broken beyond repair. She had emotions and I didn’t not. She’d rather save a rabbit than kill it. I had grown past that. I was six years old when I grew past that. She was nineteen. And the man was fifty something."
Oh the surprise kept coming and they got even worse.
"Fifty something, you say?" Markus tried not to sound outraged. He didn’t know who the man was but he wished he could resurrect him and kill him himself.
"Yes. And he didn’t like her. He only wanted something from her father’s safe. She still does not know that. We wanted her to at least keep the fact that her first love loved her back."
"Well, if it would help her heal faster, you should tell her. Unless it is because she wouldn’t believe you. But if the chance comes, you should tell her." He advised and she nodded.
Asli went back to her silent self. He could tell she needed to get that off her chest.
"We are at the Villa. Do you want to deliver the OneDrive yourself or should I take you to your Suite?" he offered and she shook her head.
"Just drop me off at the gate. I will ask one of my men to bring my car. You should give him the pendrive. If he asks about me, tell him I’m taking care of some business." She picked up her phone and dialed a number. She quickly ordered the receiver to bring her car.
Markus tried to hide the tease in his tone. "I could drive you to wherever you are going."
"No!" She quickly declined. That just confirmed his suspicion.
She was going to meet his cousin. The lucky bastard. He smiled at her.
"What?" She asked as she eyed him suspiciously.
"Nothing. You overwork yourself." He quickly diverted the attention.
"I know." She murmured.
She got down from the car and watched Markus drive away. Once it was out of sight, she dialed another number.
