Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-One

"She’s careful too," Cole said as if he had read his thoughts. "She would never tell anyone what she was doing... never even show that you were involved with her. Nobody knows what you two were doing. Asli would never let it show in her command. But I saw it."

He shifted his weight, then smiled, though it did not touch his eyes. "I had my suspensions but oh boy I laughed at myself for ever thinking you two could ever agree to even be in the same hall together. But hearing you set the whole Villa in a safe mode right before they arrived, I knew you were waiting. Waiting for her to show up. You did not panic when she showed up with as many men as she could find. You knew. Didn’t you? I thought maybe a spy told you but thinking about it, no spy could ever give you the details. It can only be Asli herself. Why would she warn you ahead of time?"

Markus was frozen now, watching him like he was unraveling something sacred. It seemed he did not expect his jokes to backfire. He was only trying to lighten the mood.

If Cole knew this much, was he snooping around while no one was watching him? He would have to check the cameras to confirm that but for now, how did Cole know all these?

Cole nodded slowly to himself before continuing. "I used to think you took me captive because you wanted intel. That you wanted to know what I knew about her father, the Villa, or any secret valuable to you and your organization. But it was not that."

He looked up. "You were protecting her. From me. Or at least you thought so. From whoever would capture me and torture some truth out of me."

The words hung in the air like thunder.

"Which was fine. I began to think you cared for her. I didn’t want to know if that was true or not. I used to cover for her," Cole said suddenly. "When she would disappear and appear, I would erase the GPS routes. Drive her car around and tamper with the timings just to throw off anyone watching. I thought I was helping her to feel human. I thought finally she was having a life, escaping the Mafia stuff, and giving herself the freedom."

He exhaled, jaw tight. "Never occurred to me that she was running to you."

Ahmet swallowed once. Still silent. Could he think he could still deny it? Deny that he wasn’t the one Asli was secretly meeting up with?

"I thought she was finding peace. Finally found something softer. Something that did not require blood and violence. I got curious, you know... I even followed the route once. Just once. I wanted to know what it was that was keeping her out of her usual activities. I did not make it to the end. I did not want to know. I wanted her to have this and just protect her from afar."

He blinked slowly. "I thought whoever she was seeing deserved her. I mean, it’s Asli here we are talking about. She’s smart! She wouldn’t let anything cross her so I thought that... That maybe... maybe there was someone out there that was making her happy or could make her happy. I thought he was even outside this life."

The admission stung more than any of them thought it would. Guilty was eating Ahmet up. He had seemed to forget that Asli was indeed human.

Who could blame him? She had carried herself so well that everyone would think she was a woman of steel. A woman without a heart.

"And now," Cole said, voice growing colder, "now I see Markus in your house. I see you trying to play both sides. And I realize Asli’s not here because of an attack. She’s here because something’s broken. She rushed here with these men because she was hurt. For once in her life he acted on her emotions and didn’t want to end up making a joke of herself."

He turned away from them, just slightly.

"She thinks you betrayed her. You and your cousin both. I mean, she could expect that from Ahmet but you Markus? You do realize she is human too."
