Chapter 90: “No, Markus will train you”

Chapter Ninety

"I can help you look for him," she murmured, tilting her head slightly. "But I do better hiding bodies than finding them."

The bully stiffened. A flicker of real fear passed through her eyes, and for the first time, she hesitated.

The air grew heavier and suffocating. The other students who had been watching took another step back, suddenly less interested in the show, and as if realizing too late that this was not just another day of their schoolyard scuffle.

Some were already running away while some still stood there, helpless... Or probably waiting to defend their leader.

Their leader swallowed hard, but she was still trying... still pretending she had control. "You think you scare me?" she scoffed, but the slight tremor in her voice betrayed her.

Asli smirked. She hadn’t even started threatening her yet... hadn’t even beaten her up yet. She hadn’t done anything yet that should scare her.

Asli took a step closer, her grip tightening just enough to make the girl wince.

"I don’t think," she whispered, her lips barely moving. "I know."

The bully’s lips parted, but no words came. She wanted to fire back, to hold onto whatever false sense of power she had, but Asli could see the tremor in her fingers, and the way her pulse beat too fast in her throat.

Asli leaned in just slightly, her voice softer now, more dangerous. "Try to touch Matilda again," she whispered, "and your father won’t be able to recognize you when I’m done."

The girl inhaled sharply.

She yanked her wrist free from Asli’s grip. Asli let go just that moment when she noticed and she stumbled back, her eyes darting between Asli and Matilda.

The moment stretched, thick with unspoken warnings, before she finally turned on her heel and fled, her friends trailing behind her without a word.

Did Asli decide not to give them that hellish beating after all?

It seemed so as she looked away from the bully’s leader. Then suddenly, they bolt like startled deer, their feet pounding the dirt. They stumble over each other in a scramble, a few tripping and hitting the ground hard.

One glanced back, panic flashing in his eyes, then scrambled up and sprinted after the others, limbs flailing. None of them dared to scream they were too busy running for their lives.

Matilda exhaled shakily, still clutching her cardigan as if it were the only thing keeping her safe.

Asli straightened, her expression unreadable as she turned to Matilda. "I have changed my mind. You will start training after school. Normal exercises in the morning before school."

Matilda swallowed and nodded, but Asli wasn’t sure if the girl truly understood what she meant.

She needed Matilda to hate this feeling. The feeling of being weak. Of being powerless.

Damn! She thought Matilda was the safest kid on earth because she had her but what good was it when she could not even tell her about it?

Asli could swear she was less intimidating when dealing with Matilda.

"I don’t care if you cry through every session. I don’t care if you think I am being too harsh. The only thing I care about is making sure the next time someone raises their hand at you, you make them regret it." She stopped walking and immediately, Matilda’s forehead came into contact with her back.

"Now, go to class. If anyone ever bullies you and you fail to report it to me, you’d be punished... severely." Asli warned and Matilda watched her in surprise but dared not say a word back. She only nodded.

"Cole will be picking you up after lectures," Asli informed her.

"Is he gonna be training me?" Matilda asked purely, there was fear in her eyes. She did not even have fear in those eyes when she warned her but then, did thinking about Cole training her enough to put fear in her?

Asli thought for a while. Cole would be too much for her. She could not possibly train her as she’d be resuming work fully soon. She would be too much for too.

Markus.

The name rang in her mind and for a while he sounded like the perfect one to train her. She had seen him fight and well, he was okay. Nothing extraordinary.

Perfect to train her little one.

"No. Markus would." She informed her and watched as Matilda’s face shone into a smile.

Markus was a clown but at least she hoped the man would teach her some basic defense moves or else Cole would take over.

Asli watched as she went through the large doors, hoping she was safe now.

She turned, walking towards the gates but then she heard a voice almost yelling "Madam!"

She turned and a girl around Matilda’s age stood there... anxiously.
