Jace and Kayla had been best friends for years, spending nearly every weekend together. Now, it was another quiet Saturday afternoon, and the two of them were in Kayla’s bedroom, seated on her the couch, the familiar comfort of her home wrapping around them like always.
The TV was on, but neither of them was watching. Flickering light from some random action movie danced across her room walls. Jace had picked the movie without thinking, scrolling mindlessly and hitting play on the first thing that popped up. He didn’t know the title and didn’t really care.
Kayla was curled up beside him, her legs tucked beneath her and her hoodie slipping off one shoulder. She looked tired, not the kind that needed sleep, but the kind that came from thinking too much.
Her phone suddenly lit up on the table. But she didn’t check it.
“Luke again?” Jace asked, his voice low and laced with quiet tension beneath the casual tone.
Kayla shrugged. “Probably. He’s mad I didn’t come over after work. He said we don’t connect emotionally anymore.”
Jace let out a dry scoff, shaking his head as he slouched deeper into the couch. “That’s rich,” he muttered. “He barely listens when you talk.”
Kayla didn’t answer right away. Her eyes shifted to him, then narrowed a little, before she turned to face him. Her legs were still tucked under her and the flicker of the TV painted soft shadows across her face.
“Don’t act like you’re doing any better,” she said, her voice low and brisk. “I saw your texts with Ava. Still a no?”
“She’s still saving herself.” Jace tilted his head back. “Which I respected at first. I still do. But now it just feels like she doesn’t even want me like that. I don’t think she’s into me that way.”
Kayla exhaled slowly. “Guess none of our relationships are working out, huh?”
“Yeah,” Jace said. “I guess not.”
“You ever feel like… you’re trapped in a relationship out of loyalty instead of desire?” she asked Jace turning her gaze to him.
Jace turned his gaze toward her also as he responded. “Every damn day.”
Kayla gave a tired smile. “Luke doesn’t satisfy me. It’s the same thing every time. No foreplay, no asking what I want. He just cums and turns away like I don’t even matter.”
“Damn.” Jace shook his head. “That’s rough.”
“Yeah. I fake my orgasm all the time just to get it over with,” she said, voice flat. Then, after a beat, she added, “Sometimes I close my eyes and think about something else while he’s fucking me.”
Jace stayed silent, just listening.
“And then I feel like shit after,” Kayla said, her voice quieter now, eyes fixed on the floor. “He’s not even a bad guy. He’s just… not good in bed.”
Jace shifted his weight and draped his arm behind her shoulders, just barely brushing her neck. “You know, sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if we never dated other people and just dated each other.”
Kayla shifted her gaze and stared at Jace, her brows pulling together. “We would’ve destroyed each other.”
“Probably,” he said with a faint laugh. “But it would’ve been fun as hell. At least for a while.”
She laughed quietly, then went quiet again. Her eyes dropped to his hand resting behind her shoulder.
“Do you ever think about having sex with other people?” Kayla asked.
“Yeah,” he said. “I do.”
She exhaled slowly, her voice dropping as she spoke. “I’m sex-starved, Jace. I just want someone to fuck me right—so damn bad.”
Jace watched her closely, noticing how she avoided his eyes and how her knees kept inching closer to his.
“How about we fuck?” Jace said, eyes locked on hers. His voice was low, but steady. “We’re close. So it wouldn’t be weird. It’s better than hooking up with some randos just to orgasm.”
Kayla hesitated, her lips parting like she might argue, but she didn’t. She looked at him for a long moment before finally speaking.
“Yeah…” she said quietly. “I guess just once wouldn’t be so bad.”
“You think it’d mess things up?” he asked.
“Probably,” she said. “But right now I don’t care.”
She moved first.
Her hand slid across the couch cushion and came to rest on his thigh, caressing it through the fabric of his pants.
Jace didn’t stop her.
“I just want to cum,” she whispered.
“Yeah me too,” he said, voice thick. “It’s been long since I had a good fuck.” He said, leaning in.
