As they neared the intersection, Jonathan slowed down until the car stopped completely.
Just as Anneliese turned to look at him, he unfastened his seat belt and leaned in close.
“Honey, are you inviting me to get a hotel room with you?”
His incredibly handsome face suddenly loomed in front of her, his breath brushing against her nose.
Hearing that “Honey,” Anneliese felt completely overwhelmed. Her heart was pounding wildly.
Her lashes fluttered. “I just thought you’d be uncomfortable, stuck in those coffee–stained clothes. Don’t get any weird ideas!”
Jonathan smirked. “Well, let’s skip it then. I wouldn’t want our first hotel experience to go to
waste.”
Anneliese was speechless.
She blinked a few times, then reached over to grab his large hand, looking right at him.
“Are you doing this on purpose just to cheer me up?”
Jonathan paused, then gave her a helpless smile. “You’re pretty sharp.”
Anneliese’s eyes softened, and her heart felt like it was melting.
That feeling when she worried the other person was upset and wanted to comfort him, but he was the one trying to make her laugh instead–it was like the warmest response deep in her soul, flooding through her.
She quickly leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips, but as she tried to pull away, his big hand clamped around the back of her neck, pulling her into a real kiss.
He sucked lightly on her lips, his tongue slipping in, kissing her hard and deep.
Anneliese’s eyes widened, but she didn’t forget they were in the middle of traffic. Anyone behind them could probably see everything.
Almost as if in response to her thought, she heard a car horn. Her cheeks burned, and she tried to pull away.

Jonathan wasn’t satisfied yet. He deepened the kiss even more, teasing her with his tongue.
Not until Anneliese let out a faint whimper did he finally let her go.
She was breathless, her cheeks flushed bright red. Jonathan lifted a hand, gently brushing her lips with his thumb before saying in a husky voice,
“Honey, you’re so sweet.”
Anneliese shot him a playful glare and turned to look out the window.
Seeing her get shy again, Jonathan took her hand in his and said, “Weren’t you trying to comfort me? A kiss works best. There are even better ways, though. Honey, you’re so smart. I know you get what I mean.”
Anneliese turned back, meeting his eyes. “Stop changing the subject! I’m talking about you. I’m not upset or mad. You saw how I handled your mom just now. I did great. So you don’t have to keep cheering me up. Really.”
She and Elizabeth had just met for the first time. She didn’t care about her and had no expectations, so nothing Elizabeth did could really hurt her.
It was Jonathan who had been the one to get coffee thrown on him and argue with his mother. He was the one who needed comfort and cheering up.
Yet he put her feelings first, like he always did. He tried so hard to make her laugh, trying to make her feel better. She was touched, but she also felt a pang of guilt, like she wasn’t doing enough for him.
He looked at her. “I wasn’t trying to cheer you up. I just wanted you to be happy.”
Her heart skipped a beat again as a surge of emotions washed over her. It was almost too much.
She felt like if this went on any longer, she’d fall even harder for him.
So she hurried to change the subject. “So, you and your mom… Is there something going on between you two?”
Her eyes held a touch of concern. Jonathan’s gaze softened, warmth flickering in his expression.
He reached out and ruffled her hair. “You don’t have to be so polite. My relationship with her has always been pretty average.”

The light turned green, so he sat back, buckled his seat belt, and started driving again.
Anneliese watched him. “But she’s your real mom, right?”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. “What, do you think she doesn’t love me?”
Anneliese quickly shook her head. “No, I didn’t mean that!”

Jonathan chuckled, watching how nervous she got, then reached over and gently pinched her cheek.
“She probably doesn’t love me all that much. The only reason she liked Selina was because she would listen to her. She just wanted someone she could use to control me.”
He sounded casual, but Anneliese felt awful just hearing it.
She could relate, because her own parents didn’t love her either.
Any warmth or kindness they ever showed her always came with a hidden agenda.
Only people who had lived through it could truly understand what it was like not to be loved by their own parents. It wasn’t easy to get over.
She put the roses in the back seat, leaned over, and looped her arms loosely around his, snuggling up to him like a clingy kitten.
