But this time, Zacharias couldn’t fire back with any angry retort. His strength seemed to vanish all at once, and the phone he’d been gripping slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

He buried his head in his hands and closed his eyes, yet something leaked out from the corners.

At first, he was furious. He felt like Anneliese had been lying to him, playing with him, keeping something so important completely
