Jensen suddenly flung Sharon aside and with one hand clamped her throat, his eyes like ice.

“Sharon,” he said coldly, “on what grounds are you speaking to me like this?”

She never expected him to lay hands on her. The crushing grip stole her breath and she struggled.

“Jensen, what are you doing? I’m your wife!”

“You? Worthy of that title?”

The hatred in his voice was raw. He nearly wanted to finish her right there, but reason kept him from crossing that line. With a violent shove, he released her.

She stumbled into a table; cups and plates crashed to the floor in sharp fragments that made the room feel even more chaotic.

“Look what you’ve done!” Lucy exclaimed. “Those were Mr. Jensen’s drinking glass and plates, and now you’ve smashed them.”

Lucy had disliked Sharon for a long time, but never dared show it because Jensen always protected her. Now, after seeing him grab her by the throat, Lucy sensed the tide had turned and her tone was merciless.

Sharon, already furious and shaken, snapped back. “Are you blind? You think I did that on purpose? Instead of cleaning up, you stand there criticizing me? Who do you think you are?”

“She’s the Luke family’s housekeeper, Lucy. And you dare speak to her like that?” Jensen’s voice cut through the air before Lucy could answer.

For the first time, Lucy felt certain: Sharon’s reign was over. At last, Mr. Jensen had opened his

eyes.

Lucy cast Sharon a taunting glance. Sharon nearly choked on her rage.

“Jensen, I was your wife! We even had a child together. People say even one night as husband and wife leaves a hundred days of affection. And now you take a servant’s side against me? Just now–you tried to strangle me!” Her voice rose to a shrill pitch.

How could this be? Jensen had always cherished her. He must still be in pain from his hand, not thinking straight. Yes–that had to be it.

But Jensen’s sneer cut her illusions apart. “Don’t talk to me about marriage. Marrying you was the greatest mistake of my life. Every time I remember being with you, I feel filthy. Sharon, if you dare claim you shared my bed, I’ll make sure you live a life worse than death.”

She froze, stunned.

“Jensen, what are you saying? What’s wrong with you? It’s me–Sharon! How can you talk to me like this?” She moved toward him, desperate.

“Lucy, keep her away from me!” Jensen barked.

Lucy stepped forward at once, shielding him. “Ms. Summers, show some respect.”

“Get out of my way!” Sharon screamed, almost losing her mind.

She had planned to distance herself from Jensen and chase Witch Doctor instead, but this— this humiliation? She had always been the one to discard others, never the one cast aside.

Her chest burned with fury. Her eyes went red as she pleaded, “Jensen, what’s happening to you? It must be the poison. Doctor, check him, quickly!”

The doctor had stood in silence, awed by Witch Doctor’s skill and Jensen’s recovery. He’d thought himself invisible, until Sharon’s shout jolted him forward.

“Mr. Jensen, let me examine you,” the doctor offered nervously.

“No need,” Jensen said flatly. “Witch Doctor operated on me. He said once I woke I’d be fine. That’s enough. Leave.”

The doctor bowed out quickly, unwilling to argue.

“Doctor, don’t go!” Sharon cried. “Jensen’s changed. He was always good to me–now his whole personality is different. It must be the poison! You can’t leave!” She lunged to block him.

Jensen shot Lucy and the private nurse a look.

Lucy understood at once. She and the nurse seized Sharon by the arms.

“Ms. Summers, if Mr. Jensen says he’s fine, then he’s fine,” Lucy said firmly. “Or do you doubt Witch Doctor’s skill? The doctor has more urgent patients–you shouldn’t waste his time.”
