“You attend it publicly; I’ll search for her covertly. Once I find Natalie, whoever’s backing them -blast their whole auction to ruins.”

Shauna hadn’t expected anyone to dare spirit Natalie away under Baron’s nose. She froze for a moment, then understood the gravity: Baron was truly enraged. Whoever had provoked him was in deep trouble.

“Mr. Baron, understood. I’ll arrange it. The auction starts in just over two hours–we’ll need a helicopter to get there.”

“Take a fighter.”

Baron had held back before; now that it was on the high seas, there was nothing left to hold him. Shauna caught his meaning. After the call, Baron left with Westin and the others.

Yvonne wanted to go, but Baron kept her behind.

“Our two children still haven’t been found. Stay in Ocean City and look for them. Natalie will want to know about the children when she returns. I won’t bring Natalie back only to lose the kids too. And I’m not comfortable leaving Mom and Dad and my big brother exposed to Rachel while her backing hasn’t been unmasked. You stay; I’ll bring Natalie back safely. The children are–everything to me.”

Yvonne had no answer. Her parents had likely been involved in the baby–swap years ago; her branch had wronged the eldest uncle and aunt. Natalie had gone missing on her watch, the nephews were missing, and Rachel and others were circling. She couldn’t abandon the rest of the Stone family to go with Baron.

“I’ll guard the house. You must bring my sister back—no, my sister–in–law. Bring her back safe.” Her eyes brimmed with tears.

Baron patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry, my woman–if even Hades tries to take her, he’ll have to ask my permission.”

Then he turned and left.

Jensen’s response was immediate and large; Payne got the news quickly.

“An offshore auction? The high seas may be lawless, but if Ms. Stone is really at that auction, the Zach family can’t sit idly by. After all, our family lost those two children. Get two invitations one for Jensen. Luke Corporation may not be global–level, but in Ocean City it still carries weight.”

Payne looked at his son Rio. “The other invitation–you go personally. You know the Stone family’s secret status. Generations of them have served the country and its people; we can’t allow their descendants to be harmed in secret. Protecting the Stone family is our duty. If we find Ms. Stone, bring her back at all costs.”

Rio nodded. “I understand, Father. This trip could be life or death. I leave my wife and children to you and Mother.”

Payne’s eyes moistened. The Zach line ran thin; he did not want Rio risking his life. But his status kept him from going to a place like the high seas–only Rio could move in that world. After Rio married Aubree, a woman of power, he gained attention, and Payne had wired him with hidden duties and identities: among them, protecting the Stone family’s talents. Natalie wasn’t a scientist, but she was Stone, and Baron had even brought a witch doctor for his mother. Public or private, Payne believed Rio needed to go.

He patted Rio’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. They’re my blood and my daughter–in–law. I’ll take care of them.”

Rio glanced once at his family’s room, steeled himself, and left without looking back.

At the same time, Baron received a call from an unknown number. He hadn’t meant to pick up, but the caller persisted and he was irritable.

“You better have something important to say, or I’ll kill you.”

When he swiped to answer, his voice was sharp. He was the Godfather–but he had tempered himself for his children and for Natalie. Now Natalie and the kids were missing; it was a miracle he hadn’t already obliterated Ocean City. He was about to set off to retrieve Natalie, and someone was phoning him at a time like this?
