“Yes! He was at the scene and went mad trying to save her. I heard the kidnapper’s dagger was poisoned–if Natalie hadn’t had the Witch Doctor brought over, Jensen would probably be dead now!”

Loretta’s words made Rachel’s heart drop.

“And the kidnappers?”

“They were taken away by the police, I think. I don’t know the details.”

Rachel staggered at that. Anna hasn’t contacted me because she was arrested?

She couldn’t believe Anna would betray her–after all these years she had raised and groomed Anna–but what mattered now was that Natalie was alive. Even worse, the one who saved Natalie was Jensen.

Rachel’s chest heaved with agitation. “Old Mrs. Lu, did you really raise him this way? Didn’t he hate Natalie? Didn’t he marry Sharon? What’s going on now?”

“Ask me? Ask who?” Loretta snapped. “He came out of your belly–how would I know why he turned out like this?”

Rachel exploded. “Shut up! When I handed him to you over twenty years ago, he became yours. If you keep blabbing, watch out–I’ll kill you. If he loses everything now, maybe he’ll be safer as Luke Corp’s president without you around.”

Loretta coldly laughed. “Rachel, do you really think I left no backup plan for that time? If anything happens to me, Jensen won’t be living that glossy life anymore. I’ll expose him as your son. Don’t you remember why you handed him to me back then? Do you want to relive being hunted like a rat in the gutter?”

“You’re threatening me?”

Rachel nearly dropped the phone, knuckles white, eyes flashing with malice. Loretta could picture the ferocity on her face.

She sneered. “Threaten you? If I hadn’t been infertile, would I have taken him? I took Jensen to secure a foothold in the Luke family, to seize the family assets and ensure a comfortable old age. Now he’s emptied Luke Corp’s funds for that woman Natalie–do you realize what will happen when the shareholders find out? They’ll unite to remove him. What becomes of my

Rachel listened, almost choking on the words. She had never expected Jensen to still care for Natalic. Years ago she had gotten Anna to alter the Witch Doctor’s report to break them apart –she did it because she was afraid Jensen would never let go. Natalic was the Stone family’s daughter; her son could never be allowed to fall for an enemy’s child.

She had engineered Sharon to be the bride, even bribed Dr. Johnson to control Sharon. Sharon was greedy and dim, but Jensen liked her. Rachel thought the marriage and Natalie’s near–death had ended any possibility between Jensen and Natalie.

Who knew Natalie would survive and return with a new face–and Jensen would suddenly be obsessed again, throwing caution to the wind.

This could not stand.

“Do the Stone family people know about Natalie being at that auction?” Rachel asked.

Loretta blinked. “The Stone family? How would I know whether they know? Natalie should be their daughter, right? Of course Luke family would know–why wouldn’t they? But why do you ask?”

Rachel didn’t answer out loud. Her mind raced. Are the Stone family aware and staying quiet? Loretta is right–Luke family knows. Would the Stone family really be unaware? But they’re acting so calm, even watching over me at this hospital. Have they discovered something about me?

Her heart plunged. No. After twenty years in the Stone family, I can’t let everything collapse now.

“Don’t worry about this. I’ll send people to stop Jensen,” Rachel snapped. “If he comes back, you can lock him up for a while–keep him from seeing Natalie. If possible, cut off any chance of him being with her.”
