Troy thought Teresa was feeling down, and maybe having someone else to talk to would make her a bit happier.

Teresa lay on her side, staring into the darkness–no matter how hard she tried, sleep just wouldn’t come.

She’d always felt that Troy must have his own reasons for sticking around, but she’d never figured out exactly what it was he wanted from her.

Maybe tonight, she finally understood.

Just as dawn broke the next morning, Charles’s phone buzzed with a message from Sharon.

About half an hour later, Sharon showed up outside the room.

Yolanda was still sleeping, so Charles quietly slipped out of the room.

When Sharon offered him the breakfast, Charles didn’t reach for it.

After a moment’s hesitation, he suddenly said, “Sharon, can you give Yoyo’s mother a call?”

Sharon looked at him, stunned. “Huh?”

He had spent the whole night replaying Yvonne’s words in his mind, feeling a pang of guilt.

“Just check in on her. Ask how she’s doing, see if she’s feeling any better,” he said quietly.

Sharon immediately understood what Charles was really thinking, and tried to gently nudge him. “Mr. Logan, if you honestly care about Yoyo’s mother, you should call her yourself.”

Charles looked away, voice dull. “I don’t care, not really… it’s just, she’s still Yolanda’s mother. I just don’t want anything to happen to her

Sharon let out a sigh. “Mr. Logan, Yoyo’s mother is truly a good woman. Don’t make the mistake of letting her slip away. Like you said, she’s Yolanda’s mom–only her real mom will ever love her that much. If you don’t hold on now, it’ll be something both you and Miss Yolanda regret one day.”

Charles went quiet for a moment, his mind wandering to the divorce agreement they’d already signed, and the fact there were maybe twenty days left before it’d all be final. At last, he said, “Whatever was between us… it’s gone now.”

After cleaning her up, Charles clumsily tried to tie up Yolanda’s hair. He wasn’t much good at it, so she ended up with a slightly messy low ponytail.

Once he had finished, he sat down to feed Yolanda her breakfast porridge.

In the middle of feeding her, Charles suddenly asked, “Yolanda, do you miss your mom?”

At the word “mom,” Yolanda’s brows knitted, and she quickly shook her head.

Seeing the troubled look on her face, Charles felt a pang in his chest but didn’t push her any further.

But just a second later, Yolanda tilted her little face up and looked at him, asking with childlike curiosity, “Daddy, where’s Miss Naomi?”

Charles smiled softly and gave her hair a gentle pat. “Miss Naomi stayed with me last night to keep you company. She didn’t leave until morning. She wanted to wait for you to wake up and spend more time with you, but I asked her to head to school first.”

Yolanda lit up, wriggling with delight. “Daddy, Miss Naomi is so good to me! Besides you, nobody loves me more than she does!”

Charles just smiled and didn’t say anything, gently squeezing her cheek. “Let’s eat for now, okay?”

Joy bubbled in Yolanda’s chest, and for the first time in a while, a bright smile broke through the paleness on her face.

Seeing Yolanda so happy, Charles thought to himself that maybe telling that little lie had been worth it after all.

Even if Naomi hadn’t actually been at the hospital last night, her heart was with them just the same.

After Yolanda finished eating, Charles packed up the food container.

As Charles handed the food box back to Sharon, he suddenly said, “Sharon, can you stay with Yolanda for a bit? I’m just stepping out to make a call—I’ll be right back.”

Sharon took the container and replied, “Sure.”

Before leaving the ward, Charles swung by the nurse’s station to ask which department takes care of adults with fevers or pneumonia.

Once he got his answer, he headed straight for the respiratory ward.

After some thought, he figured he should go see Teresa.

When Charles reached the nurse’s station in the respiratory ward, he asked which room Teresa was in. The nurse told him she’d been assigned to one of the VIP suites.

He thanked her and headed straight for the VIP wing.

When he finally found Teresa’s room, he heard Leo’s voice coming from inside. “Yvonne, look! I brought you some cupcakes, fruit, and bubble tea. Oh, and I also grabbed some comic books–take a look and see which one you like.”

Charles peeked through the glass window.

Teresa was propped up against the headboard, while Troy sat beside her, busy peeling an orange. Leo was perched at the foot of the bed, showing Teresa each of the goodies he’d brought.

Charles was about to enter, but when he spotted the two guys inside, he suddenly realized he wasn’t needed here at all–showing up was pointless.

‘So this is what I was worried about?‘ Charles thought. Teresa wasn’t
