The word 'love' coming from his lips made Henrietta's stomach turn. Sleeping with another woman the night before their engagement, then turning around to profess his love for her?
Her face was a cold, emotionless mask. "Let go."
Matteo could see that this wasn't a game or a test. She was serious. This was a real breakup, and she felt nothing for him.
Why? She had loved him so much! She came from such an incredible family, yet she had chosen him, a boy from a poor background. She had poured everything into supporting his career. How could she suddenly act so detached, as if she had never loved him at all?
Matteo couldn't figure it out. The only explanation was that she knew about the other person in his room last night. She knew he had cheated but hadn't confronted him, choosing instead to wait until today to humiliate him.
Even though he suspected this, he couldn't let his guilt show. He had to maintain that he had done nothing wrong.
Instead of dwelling on the 'why,' Matteo changed his tactic, his voice softening. "Henrietta, today is our engagement. All our guests believe they are coming to an engagement party. If you suddenly break up with me, how are we supposed to explain it to them? We can't very well turn a beautiful engagement party into a breakup announcement, can we?"
Henrietta looked at him. "You want me to throw you a breakup party? Don't flatter yourself. This is my birthday party. It has nothing to do with a breakup."
It suddenly occurred to her that Matteo hadn't wished her a happy birthday at midnight, nor had he mentioned it when he saw her today. Clearly, her birthday hadn't even crossed his mind.
Matteo frowned. "But Henrietta, I invited the guests in the name of our engagement! If there's no engagement, how am I supposed to face them?"
"Is that my problem?"
