“No,” Henrietta said, shaking her head. “Wearing it the moment I get it would seem too eager. A piece like this should be put away safely.”
Her mother had brought up the idea of an arranged marriage, and she had already decided to meet with the Leland family first; Yosef wasn't even her top choice. Wearing his extravagant gift now would make things incredibly awkward later on.
Winona blinked. “You're not thinking of giving it back because it's too expensive, are you?”
Henrietta thought for a moment. “No, I don't think so. I can afford to accept a gift like this.”
But wearing it immediately would be impolite, unless she had already decided to marry him. That would be a different story entirely.
“Exactly!” Charlotte said. “You have to accept it. Besides, in all of Juno City, you’re the only one who can pull it off. On anyone else, the necklace would wear them.”
Charlotte wasn't exaggerating. A multi-colored piece like that would overpower anyone without a flawless, pale complexion.
“True,” Winona agreed with a nod. “Let's put it away for now.”
Charlotte quickly tucked the box into her large handbag and patted it for safekeeping. Henrietta couldn't help but smile.
“Wasn't Yosef engaged to Britney at one point?” Winona whispered to them. “They were together for a while, and Britney was on cloud nine, telling everyone how wonderful and gentlemanly he was. Why did they call off the engagement?”
Henrietta shook her head. “I have no idea.”
...
Meanwhile, the Colemans, who had been thrown out of the hotel, were making a scene at the entrance.
