When Two Winters Met (Henrietta and Yosef) novel Chapter 55

“You!” Matteo fell to the floor, his anger flaring.

“Can’t handle that?” Henrietta’s voice was light, laced with mockery. “Your sincerity sure is cheap.”

She then reached down, slipped off her shoe, and held it suspended over the nearby trash can. Her cool eyes fixed on Matteo as she relaxed her grip. The shoe clattered into the bin.

Matteo’s eyes widened. She had thrown away the shoe that touched him. Was she… implying he was filthy? But the sole of a shoe is already dirty. Was she saying he was dirtier than the bottom of her shoe?

“Henrietta!”

“It’s Ms. Sargent!” Henrietta’s face hardened.

Matteo’s anger immediately deflated. He realized it was this very air of superiority that had driven him to Artina in the first place. And now… she was even more untouchable. And all he could do was swallow his pride. An indescribable feeling churned in his stomach.

“Ms. Sargent,” Matteo said, reining in his temper. “If you don’t want to get back together, why increase your investment in me? And you’re even launching Jolie’s career. You obviously still love me! So… can you just stop this game?”

The sight of his pretense disgusted Henrietta. Still loves him? The nerve.

“Business is business,” Henrietta said. “Do you want me to mix personal feelings with business and come after you? Fine. Then I’ll fire Leon and Jolie immediately, and as for you…”

“No, no, don’t!” Matteo panicked.

If Henrietta targeted him, he would be ruined. Absolutely finished! His contract hadn’t expired; he was completely at the company’s mercy. He couldn’t possibly afford the buyout clause. Even if Artina helped him pay it, with the Sargent family’s influence, Henrietta could blacklist him and he’d still have no future. He was trapped.
