Chapter 20
Nathaniel felt a sharp pain in his heart, overwhelmed by a deep sense of helplessness and
unease
How was any of this different from what happened to them in their previous lives?
The only difference was that his and Genevieve’s roles had been reversed.
As a man himself, how could he not see that Derrick was interested in her? Only she remained oblivious!
No! Perhaps… she wasn’t oblivious at all…
Maybe, just like he had done in his previous life, she felt sorry for Elaine, always feeling indebted to her, treating her better and better, and eventually even giving her a bit of genuine affection.
With this thought, Nathaniel’s face instantly turned pale.
Always confident and proud, he suddenly lost all confidence when it came to matters like
this.
He couldn’t firmly hold onto Genevieve’s heart.
It had been that way in their previous life, and now it was even worse.
Nathaniel stared intently at Genevieve’s back, his fingers digging into his palm.
After a long while, he punched the wall beside him.
A deep sense of powerlessness swept over his entire body.
He felt a kind of exhaustion that he couldn’t put into words.
Clearly, he had been given another chance at life; he should have been able to sweep away the regrets of the past with Genevieve and be happy together.
But now, it seemed everything was following the same path as before, only with the roles reversed.

Nathaniel leaned against the wall, closed his eyes, and took several deep breaths, struggling to control his emotions.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Genevieve watched his reaction in silence, the corners of her lips curling up in satisfaction.
Now that everything had happened to him, didn’t it feel terrible?
Having one’s life in someone else’s hands, even the person you love treating someone else better, all the while claiming it’s only out of gratitude for a kidney donation.
How could such a feeling possibly be pleasant?
In her previous life, Genevieve had thought countless times about giving up the kidney transplant, just spending the rest of her days with Nathaniel. After her death, he could be with someone else and start a new life.
But at that time. Nathaniel stopped her from giving up treatment again and again, giving her hope each time, only to leave her in despair.
The last time, when she had already accepted the reality of death, he brought Elaine to the operating table, saying that this time he was serious and would really go through with the
surgery.
But in the end, he gave up just because of a small thunderclap.
Her life seemed to be nothing more than a tool for him and Elaine to flirt with each other- utterly ridiculous.
Now that the same thing was happening to him, why couldn’t he accept it? He hadn’t even experienced the worst of the pain yet.
He had also come back to life, hoping for her forgiveness and to be with her, so he ought to go through these trials.
After savoring Nathaniel’s pain, Genevieve pushed open the door to Derrick’s room.
“Thank you for agreeing to cooperate with my act. I will transfer your payment to your account as promised.”
Derrick still wore a gentle smile, but he sighed helplessly.
“Genny, you know I don’t want to just talk business with you. I hope that one day you’ll give me a fair chance to pursue you.”

After a long silence, Genevieve only said, “Sorry”
“I still have things I need to accomplish right now. I haven’t considered being with anyone else for the time being.”
“I know, Genny” Derick gently ruffled her hair and coaxed softly. “I can tell you want to get back at Nathaniel, but what about after that? Do you really still want to be with him?”
“I don’t know exactly what happened between you two, but I do know he’s not right for you. There are rifts between you that can’t be mended. Even if you forgive each other one day, being together will only bring more pain to both of you.”
“Do you really want to live forever in suspicion and unease? When it’s all over, let yourself go, and let Nathaniel go too.”
His voice was like a gentle, refreshing mountain spring, effortlessly soothing the turmoil in Genevieve’s heart.
For a moment, she couldn’t help but follow his words and imagine.
If, after everything ended, she stayed with Nathaniel, would she really be happy?
The answer was already clear–she would not.
No matter how you try to mend a shattered mirror, it can never return to its original state.
Perhaps it was time for her to consider the possibility of another kind of life.
Having finally gotten a second chance, there was no need to remain trapped in the past.
