Chapter 543
Anathea curled her fingers, an odd look flickering in her eyes as she noted her proximity to Theo. His scent enveloped her like an unyielding mist, invading her space and leaving no room for escape.
But the next second, Anathea’s phone rang, shattering the strange tension between her and Theo.
As though saved by divine intervention, Anathea quickly backed out of Theo’s embrace and fished out her phone. She froze when she saw Castena Central Hospital’s number flashing on the screen.
A sense of foreboding suddenly gripped her. Did something happen to Adam? Her breath hitched, and her heart raced uncontrollably. She willed her fingers to stop shaking and exhaled to calm down, then put the call through. “Hello?”
“Ms. Jacobson…” The doctor’s calm, steady voice sounded on the other line, but his next words made Anathea’s heart leap to her throat. “Mr. Jacobson, your father, has responded.”
Anathea nearly forgot how to breathe at that moment. Her eyes prickled and turned red with tears, and it was only through superhuman effort that she managed to keep her voice from cracking. “I see. I’ll go over right now.”
She was still in a daze when she hung up. She stood in place, her expression inscrutable.
“What’s wrong?” Theo immediately grew worried when he saw the blank look on Anathea’s face. “Did something happen?” He panicked even more when Anathea didn’t reply immediately. He started to fret, wondering if something bad had happened to her, and the suspense had his heart plummeting to his stomach
The next second, the tears Anathea had been painstakingly holding back finally overwhelmed her. “My dad responded!”
She was smiling through her tears, and the sight of it tugged on Theo’s heartstrings. He gaped at her for a few seconds before carefully reaching out to pull her into his arms. “Why are you crying, then? This is amazing news!”
“It is!” Perhaps Anathea was so overcome with joy that she didn’t bother pushing Theo away. She rested her forehead against his chest as she worked to regain her composure.
Theo tightened his arms around her, his lips curling into a smile. To think, he used to hate Adam with a passion. This was the first time he desperately wanted to thank Adam.
…
Gregory caught wind of Adam’s news as well. He took the chopper with Louie and returned to Castenea overnight.
“From now on, reinforce the hospital’s security. Do not let anyone slip through and attempt any funny business,” Gregory ordered gravely. “I want Adam to be alive for when Annie shows up to see him regain consciousness.”
“Got it.” Adrian chuckled on the other line, jesting, “You’re being little paranoid, don’t you think?”
Gregory said nothing. It wasn’t as if he could help it. Adam was important to Anathea, after all, and Gregory didn’t want her to miss seeing Adam alive and awake. Besides, this could be the only and most important turning point for him and Anathea.

It was two in the morning when Anathea and Theo got off the helicopter. She was in such a hurry that she staggered and nearly twisted her ankle. Theo caught her in time and held her steady. “Slow down, take it easy. Your father will be fine.”
Tears still glistened in Anathea’s eyes. She swallowed a sob and nodded in response, then hurried into the elevator with Theo. When they arrived, several people were already standing outside Adam’s hospital room. Anathea recognized the attending doctor, a nurse, Louie, Adrian, and…
Her gaze paused on Gregory, but quickly moved back to Adam’s attending doctor as she pressed him for details of Adam’s condition.
Theo quickly fell in step behind Anathea.
Gregory remained in place, lowering his gaze to hide the emotions lickering in his eyes. No one could tell what he was feeling
