ROMAN
“You’re sure they stopped in Ashvale?”
“Yes,” my guy, Ritchie, answers. “They’ve checked into a hotel named Ashvale Heights. They’re getting their bags out of the trunk right now.”
I sit back in my chair, mind racing. When I spoke to Nikki, she didn’t exactly tell me what they’d be doing. I’m pretty sure she only mentioned that they’d be going on a trip to their mother’s hometown. Why? I have no idea either. I’ve been too distracted, and that’s not a good thing.
Then again, I was distracted when I was comforting her on the death of her mother’s best friend-a woman who’d done so much for her and her mother’s charity, Wings of Grace, who also happened to be Sebastian’s godmother, which was how Nikki met him in the first place.
She told me about the trip but didn’t give me any details.
Thinking of it now, I find it strange, and I actually think that she was keeping the information from me on purpose. Why? Why doesn’t she want me to know what she’s doing there?
“Make sure to keep following them. I want to know what they’re doing. You’re sure they’re not being followed?”
“Positive,” he claims. “I’ve been keeping an eye on things, boss. You have nothing to worry about.”A knock on my door distracts me. I shoot my secretary an annoyed look, and she smiles apologetically in turn. To Ritchie, I say, “I’ll call you back.”
“Sure thing.”
I put the phone in the receiver. She tells me, “I’m sorry for the intrusion, Mr. Hayes, but there’s a lawyer on the phone who wishes to speak with you.”
“Who? My lawyer?”
“No. He’s the man who delivered the file I gave to you a couple of days ago.”
Ah. That shit. I forgot all about it. “What does he want?”
“Follow up, I guess.”
“Tell him I’m busy.”
“Alright, Mr. Hayes.”
Once she walks out, I start searching the drawers for the file. I find it in no time, and I don’t waste any time opening it and starting to read.
Notice of Paternity Claim?
What the hell is this?
I scan through the pages quickly, taking in the name of the woman who’s naming me as the father of her unborn child. The name doesn’t ring a bell at all. In other words, this is all a fucking scam.
An annoyance, really.
I decide to call the lawyer, so l ask my secretary to call him for me. Moments later, I have the prick on the phone.” Good afternoon. This is Leroy Whetton.”
“Roman Hayes. You had a file delivered to me? A paternity claim?”
“Ah, yes. Mr. Hayes. It’s great to finally hear from you.
Have you read the files? We’d like a response from you before we can set a court date. My client would like to resolye this privately.”
“Your client is delusional. I don’t know who this woman is.”
“My client maintains that she met you some months ago, and that you’re the father of her child. I understand this may come as a surprise to you, but I strongly advise you to follow the procedures or, as I’m sure you know, it’ll be considered a non-compliance. Have you reviewed the document?”
