NICOLE
I take a few bites of the pasta Roman has prepared for us and then look up at him. In the car, I didn’t have the impression that something was wrong, but now, looking at him? I definitely feel like something is off.
He meets my gaze and offers me a small smile. ”
Everything okay?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
I’m taken aback by this statement because I didn’t realize that he could pick up that something was off with me, too.
I keep thinking about the conversation I had with my father and it’s stressing me out. I can’t figure out what he wants.
But I’m trying to be more present in the moment, so there’s that.
“I’m fine,” I tell him. I don’t think it’s the right time to share this with him yet. I guess I’m afraid of what he’ll think about my decision-making. Plus, he has so much on his mind since Garith’s death and I don’t want to burden him with my problems.
When I realize it, about ten minutes have gone by in total silence. I arch my brow as I look over at him. What’s wrong? He appears to be deep in thought and his brows are even furrowed. There’s definitely something on hismind but can I blame him for keeping it to himself when I’m doing the same thing?
No.
Suddenly, he looks up. “Nikki.”
“What?”
He puts his fork down and I do the same thing.
“Tell me what’s wrong. Right now.”
“Nothing’s wrong, per se.”
“What, then?” He leans closer to me and I do the same until there’s not much space between our faces. We’re seated on stools by the kitchen island. He lifts his hand and caresses my face. “Hm? I thought you could share everything with me.”
“I don’t want to burden you.”
“Don’t even say that.”
“It’s the truth, though,” I admit before sighing and resolving to tell him what happened today. “I spoke to my biological father. He seems to be stalking me.”
He frowns. “Who? The Bruiser guy you were telling me about?”
“Yes. Mason found this invitation with his phone number stuck to the door, and when I called him, he told me hewanted to meet.”
“Meet where? When?”
“Tomorrow at some restaurant.”
“I don’t think you should gò.”
“I don’t either, but I want this to be done and over with. He has something to say to me. I think he’s afraid I’ll find out who he is and tell the whole world I’m his daughter. He clearly has a lot of money.”
“That’s one good reason why you shouldn’t go. He could be dangerous, baby, and you’ll be all alone with him.”
“What could he do to me in a restaurant downtown? If he truly wanted to hurt me, he would’ve done that by now, don’t you think? If he had someone follow us from Ashvale, then he could’ve made sure we never left if he wanted us dead.”
