ROMAN
Bright and early in the morning, my lawyer calls me to find out when ! want to have the meeting with the woman I got pregnant.
Fuck, this is a never-ending nightmare at this point. I just want to get it done and over with. “We’re going to have to discuss a contract to keep her mouth shut. Yesterday she came looking for me! At my building!”
I can’t have that. If she’s some kind of stalker of something, then we have to set a few rules.
I don’t have space for her in my life, and I’ve decided that I won’t let something as meaningless as this ruin what I have with Nikki. Last night, I know my behavior hurt her feelings and I have to make up for that.
But first, I’ll deal with this in the best way possible. As I said, this won’t ruin my relationship. Nikki never has to know about this woman and the bullshit mistake I made.
My lawyer tells me, “Well, I spoke to her lawyer about that and the woman insists that she wants to see you alone first, to discuss a few things before they’re written down.”
“Is she fucking crazy?”
“I need you to calm down for a bit. Remember, you want to keep something this big out of the press. Right now, she’s not bound by any contract, so she could speak to whoever she wants, especially if you don’t comply with her demands.”
I run a hand down my face in frustration. “Fine. Where?”
He gives me the location of a coffee shop and asks me to memorize absolutely everything she wants so he can draw up a contract as soon as possible along with an NDA.
I arrive twenty minutes earlier than the time she specified, and I’m surprised to see that she’s already here. I find her seated alone at thevery back of the shop, smiling at me with one hand resting on her belly, which is visible even from where I’m standing.
I sit down, she starts to talk, but I raise a hand and say rudely, “First and foremost, I want you to know that this isn’t a meet-and-greet. I’m not enthusiastic about anything pertaining to this child and much less you. You said you wanted to meet and list your demands? I’m all ears.
They better be reasonable or I’m walking out that door.
Her smile slips. “I thought we could get to know each other a little, since we’ll be co-parenting. That night was so unforgettable to me and…”
I give her a hard look that makes her trail off and turn her head to the side as red stains her cheeks. She then nods, almost to herself, and says, “Fine, we can get straight to business. I don’t just want money-l want my baby to have a present father.”
“That’s not up to you. I can do what’s legally required of me without having to ever see the kid, and that’s how I intend to keep it.”
Her eyes widen. “But you’re the father!”
“Of a child I never wanted,” I hiss, seething. “Have you ever taken that into account? I barely even remember you. What makes you think I’ll want that kid? Look, you’re not being reasonable, so maybe we’ll have to cut this short.”
“Fine,” she repeats. “If you don’t want to meet your son or daughter when he or she’s born, that’s fine. But I have my demands and I spoke to my lawyer about them.”
I take a deep breath. Patience has never been my virtue.
“I want you,” she claims in a low voice. “Or at least, a chance to be with you while I’m pregnant.”
