NICOLE
“It’s complicated,” I answer right away, looking over my shoulder to make sure that the door that leads to the room is still closed.
“Complicated?” Roman asks a little loudly, squinting his eyes at me. “I think we have time, Nikki. For fuck’s sake. I came in here to escape the noise out there and all of a sudden, I see you standing here. I thought my eyes were tricking me! I could hardly believe it when I saw Mason out there.”
1 stare at him for a few beats and wonder how to approach this. I glance at the door again. He doesn’t know that The Bruiser and his family are waiting for me in that room. I decide to get away from the door and take his hand.
Together, we walk along the long corridor. I’m aware of his eyes on me the entire time.
But not here. I don’t want to have a conversation with him white The Bruiser could walk in on us.
We only stop when we’re almost at the exit. His eyes never leave my face. I take a deep breath and pathetically try to gather my thoughts. I fail. “You remember what I told you about my father, right?”
“Yes, he was calling you all the time…something like that.
I don’t understand what that has to do with you being here.”I feel a flash of annoyance when he says this to me because I remember telling him about the invitation, but he probably forgot because he wasn’t paying enough attention, and that’s how he’s been for days now. “My biological father has everything to do with this, Roman.
He’s the one who invited me to this event. He even made sure to invite Mason’s firm so that I’d show up. It’s crazy and makes no sense, so don’t bother trying to ask me about it. I don’t know either.”
Roman’s eyes are wide. “He’s here? In this event?”
“Yes?”
“Nikki…only the richest men in this country are in this event. Hell, even I wouldn’t have made the cut if I weren’t invited by the Calieris. What the hell is your father’s name? Who is he?”
“I don’t know. I never heard his name.” Even after | answer this, I try to recall if Amanda ever mentioned his name. ” only know their first names. I met them just now.”
‘Them’ who?”
“The Bruiser’s family. My half-siblings. They’re…they look like me. It’s crazy and scary, Roman.”
He runs a hand down his face and looks around. “Shit. I’m dizzy and everything. I didn’t know you’d be here. I had no idea at all. Isn’t that crazy?”
I fold my arms, remembering Mason’s words. “You didn’ttell me you would be here either, Roman. It seems you don’t tell me anything about your life anymore. If you had mentioned it, maybe we would’ve come here together.”
I don’t care that my tone is accusatory. I’m genuinely throwing this in his face.
Roman’s expression softens. “I know. You’re right, okay?
I’m sorry. But everything is resolved now.” I don’t ask him anything and he must figure out the question behind my eyes because he adds, “The reason why I’m here is a little embarrassing, to say the least. I was practically forced to come here by one of Garith’s killers.”
My breath catches in my throat. “What? What do you mean by forced?”
