Wild Nights With My Brother’s Ex-Best Friend novel Chapter 142

NICOLE

The next day at work, the happiness of last night almost threatens to disappear.

But hold onto it.

I’m not going to let Angus affect how I feel to this extent.

He can’t rule every single part of me.

I’m expecting a quiet day the same as yesterday, but I’m surprised to find Sandra sitting in my office. As soon as I enter, she turns around and smiles when we make eye contact. Today, she looks even more like me. It’s insane.

“Nicole! You look amazing!” She kisses me on the cheek and then holds me at arm’s length. “It’s so good to see you! How are you settling in? Dad asked us to show up and give you some moral support.”

“You don’t work here?”

“No, i don’t,” she admits. “I’m not cut out for this kind of thing, you know?”

1 nod, opting not to say anything. She asks me again, “How are things?”

“As good as they can be, I guess.”

Her expression softens. “You don’t want to do this, do you?”I guess not. I don’t know Angus enough. This whole thing has been forced.” I don’t bother keeping it from her because I’m pretty sure she knows exactly what I’m talking about. “Maybe someday I’ll get used to it.”

“Yeah. Come on. Leo is in the other room.”

“He works here, too?”

“He manages other parts of the company, particularly the media and tech aspects,” she explains. “But Dad has always needed help with everything, and now with his diagnosis-”

Sandra cuts herself off abruptly, and when I look over at her, I see that her face is red from embarrassment. I want to ask her what she meant by the diagnosis, but I leave it at that. What’s that supposed to mean, anyway? That Angus is dying?

Is that why he wanted me to join him?

Leonardo is indeed in the next room, and as soon as we enter, he cuts me a look that makes me feel out of place.

It’s evident that he doesn’t want me here. Honestly? I don’t vibe with him either. There’s something so sour about him.

What’s his problem, anyway?

“Leo, guess who’s here!” Sandra exclaims excitedly, unaware that her brother doesn’t give a rat’s ass about me.

He doesn’t even answer her.”Come on, Leo. Say hi to our sister.”

At last, he looks up at us both, and he’s glaring at his sister now. “Don’t call her that. Don’t you know? She hates to be associated with us and doesn’t even want her here. If it weren’t for her lover, she would never have agreed to any of this.” His eyes finally meet mine and he smiles cruelly. “Isn’t that right, little sister?”

“There’s no reason why you have to be so rude,” Sandra shoots back, taking my hand in mine. “You know how much this means to Dad.”

“You know what I think?” he asks as he slams the drawer he was rummaging through shut. He straightens his spine and runs his hands down the front of his suit. “I think Dad doesn’t know what he’s doing anymore.”

“That’s rude!” she barks before turning to look at me.”

Don’t listen to him, Nicole. He’s just bitter that Dad isn’t going to leave him everything. He’s always been an asshole.”

Leonardo ignores her words and we start to turn away, but he mutters something under his breath that I catch, and I know it’s directed at me.
