LIAM POV
I thought about it for a long time, but I still couldn’t make sense of it.
Claire had once loved me so deeply that her love was unconditional. That was how it was supposed to be with mates, never-ending. Even after the rejection went through, how could she pull away so completely, so quickly?
It didn’t make sense.
It was supposed to be a slow process and give the other a chance to fix things. Wasn’t it?
But how could she change the moment we split, like she’d been reborn into someone else-so resolute, so merciless, without leaving the slightest trace behind?
The more I thought about it, the more my head throbbed like it was about to split open. That was when Breanne called me.
When my screen lit up with the words <3 My Brea-Brea <3, the sight suddenly made my skin crawl.
I rejected the call at once and quickly changed the contact name to her full name, Breanne Telder.
When the phone rang again, I picked up impatiently. “Hello? What is it?”
“Lee-Lee…” Breanne’s voice came through whiny sobs. “Both my knees are swollen from the kneeling you made me do. I can’t even get out of bed. Both Alpha and Luna are at the hospital, and the omegas on shift today didn’t even prepare breakfast for me. I’m starving.”
“You can’t order food delivery yourself if you’re hungry?” I asked with irritation.
“But, I don’t want pack food deliveries, I want a fancy restaurant, and I know you’re in the city. You used to rush out at all hours to get whatever meal I wanted-” Breanne dragged out the words pitifully.
My brows immediately knitted into a deep frown.
Strangely, her whining now made my skin crawl with goosebumps, even a wave of disgust.
It hadn’t been like this before. What changed?
Forcing myself to hold back that sickening feeling, I said coldly, “I don’t have time right now. I need to get to the hospital to see Mum. Just try ordering delivery from the dinner in the pack. I have to go.”
Before Breanne could respond, I had already ended the call.
1 ordered the driver to speed toward the hospital where my mother was admitted.
It happened shortly after the situation at the Cruz celebration. When I rush out after Claire and that bastard, my parents had to remain there and face the shame of Breanne and her behaviour.
It was too much for my mother to handle.
When I entered the ward, I rushed to the bedside and grasped her hand.
“Mum, how are you feeling?”
“What do you think?” My mother sighed. “My heart’s been racing. The doctor says it might be a heart problem. I’ve been under too much stress; I shouldn’t have had to bear it.”
My chest tightened.
Ever since Claire had officially rejected me, the Sterling Moon pack and my family had been plagued with endless scandals-almost all of which are connected to Breanne.
Even I was reaching my breaking point of tolerance, let alone my parents.
“Don’t worry, Mum. We’ll have you moved to our pack hospital and recruit the best cardiac doctor there is,” I promised.
“Liam, no doctor can fix this. What I have is a sickness of the heart!” My mother suddenly raised her voice. “You need to get rid of Breanne. I doubt anyone would want to marry her now anyway. Just send her back to her hometown. The sight of her alone makes my blood boil!’ We can no longer trust her with the pack’s reputation.’
I frowned again.
“Mum, I already reached out back home. Her cousin’s family occupies the old house that Breanne’s parents used to live in; he and his wife have several pups under one roof. There aren’t any spare rooms. If we send her back, wouldn’t it make more sense to buy her a place there?”
My mother’s voice shot up another octave.
*Buy her a house? Liam, don’t go soft. If she stays here, she’ll only cause more trouble. Send her away so your father and I can have some peace in our later years.”
The moment she finished, her emotions spiked again. She clutched at her chest, gasping in pain.
“Mum, please, calm down. Leave it to me.”
I quickly steadied her, my heart heavy with conflicting emotions,
Watching my mother suffer, I finally realized that if Breanne weren’t sent away soon, then my family and pack would never know peace.
After leaving the ward, I let out a long sigh and immediately dialled Breanne’s cousin back in her hometown, Slave Lake.
I knew Breanne was going to be upset with me, but this had to be done. My mum was right. Alphas had to do what was best for the pack, and that meant sending my troublesome best friend back to her small-town life for now.
Fingers crossed.
As the call to her cousin Vinny rang, I reaffirmed my stance on this.
This decision was not only best for the pack, but it was also the best way I could protect Breanne from herself.
But I wouldn’t abandon Breanne. I just needed everyone to think I was. This was best for all of us.
I would go back for her. Once I got the title from my father, and Claire was on my arm, wearing my mark, I would bring Breanne back.
***BREANNE POV***
I had been lying in bed the whole day. It wasn’t until the phone rang for the third time that I finally poked my head out of the blanket and shakily grabbed the phone.
“Hello? What is it?”
“Breanne, I just wanted to give you a heads up. Liam just called and asked me to pick you up from the pack and bring you back to Slave Lake. I booked time off work and will come by on Friday to collect ya.
Start packing. I want to be back on the road quickly.”
I shot up from bed in disbelief.
A strange fear crashed over me like a tidal wave.
“Liam called you? When? Who said I was going back? That’s not true-I never planned to return!”
“About half an hour ago. He said you’ve been causing trouble for the pack, and they can’t keep you anymore. He wants you to come back here for a while. He even told me to buy a place for you near the old house so that you can settle down here.”
“Breanne, I’m telling you, it’s better here than city life. It’s calmer. When you come back, I’ll set you up with some matches. I’ve got plenty of friends around town that are still single-they have all types of careers, from barbers, cooks, to mechanics. You’ll definitely find someone you like!”
As my cousin, Vinny, rambled on as though he was my freaking saviour in this.
I felt wave after wave of bile crawling up from the pits of my stomach to my throat.
A barber? A mechanic? A cook? Was he insane?
I was the Sterling family’s pampered unofficial daughter, and if I had my way, future Luna.
How could I ever be compared to people like Vinny and those disgusting men he is considering?
Pride surged in my chest-until, in the very next moment, I realized that I was losing not only the title I was given, but the Sterling Alpha family’s protection.
If they cast me out, all I had left was to return home and marry a barber, a mechanic, or a cook.
I was paralyzed with the reality of my situation.
I needed to fix this quickly.
