A Divorce He Regrets (Alissa Nexus) novel Chapter 352

AVA

I was laying in bed, trying to get back into my normal routine. But I had been staring at the same line for over ten minutes. The words blurred, danced and rearranged themselves into nonsense. Reading used to be effortless, a nightly ritual that wrapped me in its quiet. Now that I wanted to get back into the routine, I wasn’t getting the words right and Kye’s face bled between the sentences like ink in water.

I closed the book with a sharp snap… for the third time tonight.

My phone glared up from the duvet, as if daring me to pick it up again. I had already typed out three different messages… “Are you awake? We need to talk… I can’t stop thinking about you,” only for me to delete every single one. Should I call him? This is pathetic… I am pathetic. I had fought tooth and nail to have my freedom, to not be under his control anymore, yet my chest felt hollow without him there to annoy me, scare me and consume me. Something is missing but I don’t know.

I flopped back in my pillows. “What is wrong with me?” I whispered to the ceiling. The fan spun lazy circles above my head, uncaring.

By eleven, I gave up on pretending to read. If I couldn’t focus, I might as well sleep early. Maybe exhaustion would keep my brain quiet. I had just tugged my blanket up, wanting to let sleep take over when my door burst open.

“Ava!” Liam’s voice cracked in panic.

He was standing in the doorway, breathless and pale, making my heart drop straight through the mattress.

“What… what is going on?” I shot upright, my book sliding to the floor.

“It’s dad.” His chest heaved. “The medics just called mom. H-he’s been in an accident and they’re taking him to the hospital now.”

The blanket tangled around my legs as I stumbled out of bed, my mind spinning. “What do you mean by an accident? Why kind?”

“They didn’t say! Ju-just hurry and come down!”

He practically ran out of the room as I yanked the first thing from my wardrobe, a soft cardigan and dark jeans. But my fingers shook so badly the buttons refused to meet their holes and my stomach felt like it was folding in on itself, a cold knot of dress. By the time I shoved on my shoes, I was breathless as if I had run a mile already.
